The Asian community is five times more likely to develop diabetes than the general population.
Pendle Radio will work closely with NHS/PCT/Health Professionals to create better health awareness amongst the hard to reach communities of East Lancashire.
January 2012 - December 2012
Charity information: East Lancashire Community Action Project
As well being at greater risk, people of Asian origin are more likely to develop the condition from the age of 25, fifteen years earlier than their white counterparts.
The call comes after recent figures have revealed that 200 people are diagnosed with diabetes in East Lancashire every month, which could be partly attributed to East Lancashire’s extensive Asian community.
ELCAP will carry out Health Shows in various local dialects with advive and guidance from professionals.
Each show will be hosted with a new topic ie Diabetes, Cholesterol, blood pressure, erc.
Secondly, it will arrange health walks and health exercise classes.
Better Health Awareness
Activities» Carry out radio programmes in various local dialects woth health professionals
» Carry out Walks and Exercise classes to improve the health and well being of hard to reach communities.
What success will look like
Hold the weekly Health Attack Radio Shows. Success will be when over 5 number of callers receive advice and guidance.
Hold the walks and exercise classes
The project aims to reverse the decline of the BME communities health. We will demonstrate the success of this project by monitoring the number of callers receiving advice and guidance.
Success of the project is also dependent on the number of participants that will be involved with the walks and exercise classes.
There is a risk that some professionals might pull out from radio shows.
Bad weather might deter participants to take part in the walks. Any walks missed will be replaced with indoor activity.
We have dealt with this risk by fostering close links with various health professionals o ensure we are best placed to replace any late drop outs.
Funders of this project will receive a monthly email report on the project detailing the ongoing and forthcoming activities, and any necessary changes that have been made to the project plans.

ELCAP has been involved with media projects for the last 10 years.
The project will take place in Nelson, Lancashire.
The residents of East Lancashire especially the BME communities will greatly benefit from ‘On Air’ advice and guidance that they would normally be shy about asking.
We have successfully carried out media projects for the past 15 years and in that time developed a network of local health professionals who contribute to the successful running of this project.
