Be including in the wider community & its decision-making
December 2011 - December 2012
Finsbury & Clerkenwell Volunteers
Following local government cuts in funding, the new service provision in Islington will focus on short-term home from hospital support & limited ongoing befriending, while the large Community Centres will provide location-based activities for people who are able to make their own way to centres or who have minimum physical needs.
We are concerned that there is a gap in service provision for a large numbe of older resident who do not fall into either category, & are at great risk of isolation
We will provice regular, ongong opportunties to enable the growing isolated, elderly or disabled population to access & enjoy actitivies & support services that improve their wellbeing & reduce the need for mental health interventions, by provision of Lunch Club, Befriending, Assisted Shopping Trips, Day Outings to our caravan & other destinations, Telephone Support, Escorts to enable people to attend hospital & other appointments
To relieve those in the area who are in need, hardship & distress as a result of age or disability
Activities» Run twice weekly lunch club providing freshly cooked meals & social interaction/support, & use our 2 ambulances to bring in clients needing transpor
» Offer regular shopping trips & outings in 2 ambulances, with escorts provided if necessary, enabling people to choose their own shopping
» Offer day outings, & longer stays, to our caravan in Essex and other destination, using our 2 wheelchair accessible ambulances
Success will be reducing the effects of isolation & despair, together with enabling people to remain in their own homes & not have to move in to residental care for as long as poss
To recruit, place and supervise a team of volunteers to deliver the services
Activities» We already have active and effective volunteer recruitment & supervision policies & proceedures
Success will be to maintain and, where possible, expand our volunteer database, and to continue to offer rewarding volunteering experiences, & training courses
To improve the quality of life of those identified in the 1st aim
Activities» As outlined in activities under the 1st aum
As identified above in Aim 1
Supplement the increasingly narrow criteria by which people can access social care
Enable housebound and/or older people to be included in the wider community and its decision-making
Reduce social isolation
Assist residents of sheltered blocks to attend in-house meetings/social activities by pushing wheelchair users to these events
Enable clients to maintain their independence
Reduce the adverse mental health complications of isolation, loneliness & helplessness
Successful recruitment & maintainance of a pool of committed volunteers are crucial. Finsbury & Clerkenwell Volunteers have a long & established history of successfully doing this, & of ensuring excellent on-going relationships & continuity with clients, referrers & other local service providers, and other local charities with pools of volunteers.
Donors will receive regular updates on the project, and any necesary changes that hve been made to the project.
They will be invited to Lunch Club, and other services, to see 1st-hand how their donations are being spent, and what a difference their donations make

The borough of Islington, though next to the commercial hub of the City of London, is the 14th most deprived borough in country, & is ranked 4th as the most deprived nationally as measured in income deprivation affecting older people, with 41% of older people living in Islington classed as poor. Male residents have the shortest life expectancy in London. Finsbury & Clerkenwell Volunters are a locally based charity who have been at the heart of effective & sustainable delivery for 40 yrs
The project will benefit isolated & housebound mainly, but not exclusively, elderly people who, through failing mobility, are now unable to access local facilities by themselves & now depend on specialist support services provided by our resources & volunteers.
Volunteers will have the opportunity to build up experience, increase confidence, obtain references & training courses as a stepping stone to employment.
Clients & volunteers will be enabled to have more active roles in their community
We have successfully provided an extensive & unique range of imprtant support & outreach services, which are proven & widely appreciated, to those in need in the community for the past 40 yrs. We're the only charity in south Islington to have 2 ambulances, enabling us to fetch/carry isolated people out of their home environment. We maintain well established local networks with other statutory/professional services.
Our Management Committee includes 50% representation of users & older people
