The People’s Theatre Company Outreach Project

To reduce the financial, practical and intellectual barriers faced by children in areas of deprivation to having joyful and inspiring theatrical experiences which enrich their lives.

  • Need


    1 in 3 children in the UK live in poverty. Poverty is a barrier to enriching theatrical experiences. Transport and ticket prices are prohibitive; adults in poor families are often disengaged from the arts due to too highbrow experiences; arts centres in these areas fail to attract high quality theatre; schools trips pass much of the cost of tickets and transport on. Arts add to quality of life: “they broaden horizons, stimulate new thinking, provide pleasure and raise aspirations” (Arts Council)


    It will target regional arts centres and schools in areas of known deprivation across the UK. It will offer two children’s shows at rates which reduce the level of cost to be passed on. Schools will have performances on site (removing travelling costs) and workshops and free teaching packs. PTC resource will supplement venue communication with targets.The shows will provide an accessible, joyful experience to deprived children and will encourage them to engage with the theatre further.

    » Campaign to target and engage schools and arts centres in areas of deprivation, including free teaching packs to add value for schools.
    » Offer schools in deprived areas low cost performances & workshops (through charitable supplement)
    » Supplement arts centre marketing resource to reach families & schools in deprived areas
    » Keep ticket prices below £6 in deprived areas

    What success will look like

    Performances in 20 schools in deprived areas will have taken place.
    The number of performances and audience turnout in these areas will increase by 25%

  • Impact


    Children who would not otherwise have had the opportunity will be inspired to further engage with the theatre as they grow up. Schools will see the educational benefits of having performances at their premises and welcome future opportunities to make the arts more accessible to their pupils. Regional arts centres will establish a link with disengaged audiences.We will demonstrate the success of the project through formal & informal feedback from schools & children who attend performances.

    A quarterly report, detailing ongoing and forthcoming activities. Also, the PTC website will highlight upcoming performances which are part of the project.

    The project will take place across schools & arts centres nationally, in officially recognised areas of deprivation.


    Children and families who do not usually have the resources to experience live theatre; schools & communities in poorer areas, and regional arts centres who will be able to make more connections with their wider community.

    Why Us?

    The PTC has a long history of touring, and has already developed and toured a number of popular children’s shows such as ‘Bink & the Hairy Fairy’ ‘The Witch’s Bogey’ and has established links with regional arts bases. The Company’s work is widely regarded as fun, funny and an excellent introduction to theatre. It also has a history of outreach work, keeping ticket prices low and plenty of experience running theatrical workshops.
