Into The Core
An interactive performance and play event that will ignite the imaginations and stimulate the senses of young people with learning and/or physical disabilities, their families and friends. Professional artists will create stories and experiences alongside those taking part.
February 2012 - March 2012
Charity information: The Core at Corby Cube
The Core already engages a wide range of Corby's communities in creative activities, despite having only opened in November 2010. We work closely with our communities to provide the creative experiences they want and need. Local families with children and young people with learning and/or physical disabilities have informed of us that there is a lack of opportunity for them to engage in creative activity together. Into The Core will provide that opportunity.
Into The Core will provide an inspirational encounter for these families to engage in interactive performance and creative play in an accessible, safe and well-equipped theatre space: The Lab. Working with a company recognised nationally for the quality of their creative work with young people with learning and/or physical disabilities, we will ensure the activity is both exciting and appropriate. We see this project as an opportunity to pilot a programme we would offer more regularly in future.
Increase opportunities for young people with learning/physical disabilities to engage in the arts
Activities» Produce our first interactive performance & play event with a company recognised for the quality of their work with young people with disabilities
8 young people with learning and/or physical disabilities engaging in creative activity at The Core for the first time and expressing a desire to come to a future event
Increase opportunities for families to engage in high quality creative activity together
Activities» Ensure the interactive event is inspiring and challenging for adults as well as young people, and encourages collaboration between adults and children
8 adults taking part in creative activity alongside their children (with learning and/or physical disabilities) and commenting on the high quality and suitability of the experience
Provide space for social interaction between young people with disabilities, families & friends
Activities» Encourage collaboration between families within the creative event and provide a connected social experience alongside it, e.g. tailored event in cafe
At least 4 of the families engaged in the event, communicating with another family outside of the creative space itself
Into The Core will increase the confidence of young people with disabilities and their families to engage in creative activity, both at The Core and in the wider community. If the project is successful, The Core will look to programme regular events and activities for the families involved and others in similar circumstances. We will share any successes and challenges with colleagues at other creative organisations.
The biggest risk is the ability to engage families with the activities. We will aim to deal with this through raising awareness of the event through our online channels, community relationships, local press and direct approaches to organisations who engage with young people with learning and/or physical disabilities. A secondary risk could be too much demand, in which case we would look to provide an alternative creative activity for those families expressing an interest but unable to attend.
We will post images, film footage and feedback on our website www.thecorecorby.com and through our online channels, subject to consent from those taking part. There will be a brief evaluation report of the project available to any who request it.

The Core at Corby Cube is the new live performance venue in Corby, Northamptonshire - a town recognised for significant economic disadvantage, but with a strong sense of community and pride. The venue has a 445 seat Theatre and a studio space known as The Lab which is fully accessible and ideal for creative workshops and small performances. The focus for The Core is engaging the widest range of the town's communities, particularly children, families and young people.
Children and young people with learning and/or physical disabilities, their families and friends. It is expected that at least 8 and up to 16 families, each with up to 4 members will benefit directly, i.e. between 32 and 64 people who do not regularly engage with or have access to appropriate creative activity. It is also hoped that by giving a high press and marketing profile to this work it will impact on perceptions of disability in the town. Corby faces significant economic disadvantage.
The Core is the principal arts organisation in Corby, led by a Creative Director recognised nationally for expertise in community and participatory arts. The staff team is equally well respected for its expertise in specialist areas such as technical, front of house etc. We will engage artists who specialise in creating work with young people with disabilities to deliver the event. The Core has strong relationships in the local community & is part of Arts Council England's National Portfolio.
