Outdoor Education in the community

Recent changes in Local Authority spending has led to a lot of groups that used to use our Adventure Centre having insufficient funds - they are either using us less or in some cases not at all. The idea is to establish a pot of money against which they could draw down - a group bursary.

  • Background

The primary area is the City of Sunderland but the Charity works with groups from across the North East region. Like most cities in the North East Sunder land is a once proud industrial city whose heart was removed with the loss of the manufacturing industries - it is slowly regenerating but there are still pockets of 2nd and even 3rd generation unemployed. Current statistics on youth unemployment do not bode well.

The City of Sunderland is an area with well documented social deprivation being in the top quartile of the deprivation index with 26% of young people living in poverty (source End Child Poverty), the withdrawl of funding for youth services has had a major impact. A similar tale exists throughout the region.
The groups that use our centre are representative of the area which we serve - from all cultural and social stratas.
