Safe Homes at Christmas
Our refuges provide safe housing for up to 21 women and their children seeking to escape domestic abuse. We work hard to restore the lives of these families and are appealing for furnishings for our properties to provide a comfortable environment at Christmas whilst they try to rebuild their lives.
Charity information: Bexley Women's Aid
After consultation with our residents we have established a need to refurbish our refuges. Women and children stay with us for up to 2 years and during this distressing time we need to provide a safe and comfortable living environment. Updated surroundings will enable women to encompass the festivities with their children at Christmas time as this can be particularly upsetting when being away from home, family and friends.
We would like to buy new furniture and redecorate the communal areas in our properties.
Refurbish our refuge properties
Activities» Involve our residents in choosing furnishings for their living areas encouraging independence and empowering the women to make their own decisions
What success will look like
Success will mean fully refurbished refuge properties and more confident women able to make decisions and take initiative
This will enable our refuges to be more homely in time for Christmas which is always a difficult time for our service users. Success will be monitored through our service user consultation questionnaires and feedback during keyworking sessions throughout the following year
We regularly review our services, procedures and policies to ensure that we minimise any risks to our organisation. For this project the risks would be not raising enough funds to carry out the work that we have planned however, we would overcome this by waiting until we have completed our fundraising before we commit to any purchases or tasks.
Bexley Women’s Aid has a proven track record in managing its grants. We are able to supply monitoring information if required in the form of financial details or statistical data. We also celebrate the successes of our services at an Annual General Meeting and produce an Annual Report.

For over 30 years, BWA has been committed to providing support and refuge to women and their children affected by domestic abuse. Our refuges are based at confidential locations within the Borough of Bexley to keep our residents safe.
Women and children living in BWA refuges will all benefit from this refurbishment. In 2010/11 we housed 79 women and 95 children in the refuge.
Our mission is to enable and empower women and children experiencing domestic abuse to obtain and sustain a safe living environment. We provide safe, temporary accommodation for women and children who have been forced to leave their home due to experiencing domestic abuse. We recognise and care for the emotional and educational needs of children to prevent long-term negative effects on their lives. We are the only project within the borough to offer refuge accommodation.
