Memory Road

The Cinema Museum (TCM) and local schools will create and deliver a well-being reminiscence pilot for residents of Woodlands (local elderly residential care home). Through cinema memorabilia, film and tea parties we will connect young and old and past present - through memories, excitement and fun

    Need

    This project addresses the problem of our fragmented society where well-being of the elderly and infirm is often unrecognised and where we are so fearful of ageing. We want to show that being ill and elderly is not necessarily a bar to well-being, nor is it a bar to having fun; in old age we can engage in a range of fun and exciting projects - not stuck in a chair in the corner of a care home. We want to start a movement that positively challenges the social reality of reaching advanced years.

    Solution

    Memory Road connects people by memory-sharing and new experiences, strengthen existing connections and enable new ones. Our cinema-teas will generate discussions on a subject of group interest which will then be explored through cinema shows and discussions about how things were and about how they have changed. It connects young and old, professionals and lay-people, culture and health care sectors and the past, the present and the future. The elderly will be our history books and our friends.

  • Impact

    Impact

    Local elderly people will have a local club that they can belong to that is respectful of their age and their aspirations. They will be able to entertain (at no cost to themselves) friends and neighbors to say thank you for their friendship; they will meet a new network of potential friends and local supporters and they will become more self sufficient.

    Risk

    insufficient interest - we have already researched to local interest in delivering this opportunity and it is likely to be very attractive to local people and their families and all those who work to support the social care of the elderly

    difficulties in attending screening events due to bad weather - we have built in funding for transportation

    Reporting

    we will invite all donors to our events to meet the participants and their families

    we will work with Westminster University Psychology Dept to measure the impact of our work and we will produce an academic paper and a user case study and share and publish both.

  • Background

    Location

    The location is The Cinema Museum in Lambeth. It is a fully kitted out museum with its own small cinema and a Lyons Corner House style tea room. The space is DDA compliant and entirely flexible to suit the potential development needs of the project. We have the facilities and the specialist knowledge to deliver our proposal, strong, committed partners, buy-in at senior levels and huge committment to this work.

    This is a pilot project that will potentially impact on all elderly people, so although it is a small seed, it aims to contribute to how we as a society look at the social processes and the social experiences and impacts of aging. We are keen to help elderly people create strong local and social networks that use the museum and its facilities as an anchor.
