Nepali Education Project

Our Sansar is primarily focused in the rural areas of Chitwan and Hetauda, where we are working with local schools to enrich the learning and education experience of school children at primary and secondary levels. We will send 11 teachers and will educate over 5000 pupils over 3 years.

  • Need

Local schools have no access to electricity, majority have no defined boundary walls for classrooms, teachers are educated to GCSE equivalent qualification with no further educational training provided, and are rampant with corporal punishment as a form of disciplining.Hence high absenteeism amongst both students and teachers, and drop-out rates is a pressing problem. There is a wide gap between rural and urban education with the literacy rates for males and females as well.

We are working closely with local schools in Chitwan and Hetauda to improve their capacity to deliver an improved standard of education. Our engagement with these schools includes provision of training for local teachers, and 1 and 2 year placements of professional teachers and trainers from the UK in the schools to work on curriculum development and provide shadow training opportunities for local staff.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Facilitate improvement of educational standards in rural Nepal.

» Providing placements to 11 trained teachers from UK on 1-2 years placements
» Delivering age appropriate interactive curriculum based on the Montessori method to pupils covering basic English, Geography/Culture, and Projects
» Facilitating advanced training for teachers

    What success will look like

Success will be all pupils staying in education, continuing further education or training.

  • Impact

    - Improved attendance rates at schools
    - Additional training and qualification gained by local teachers
    - Best practice established for curriculum development

There is a risk that one of the teachers might cancel their placement last minute. We have a large number of experienced teachers that we closely keep in touch with and who are ready to replace any teacher that cannot fulfill his placement.

All data and case studies will be compiled into quarterly reports which will be made available to internal staff and donors. We will also be publishing a newsletter and articles on our website.

  • Background

Our programme focus is Chitwan and Hetauda. Chitwan and Hetauda are rural areas in Nepal with extreme poverty and according to needs assessment there were no charities or governmental agencies working on educational projects in these rural areas.Currently an estimated 38% of the Nepalese population is aged under 14 years.

More than 3400 pupils from impoverished backgrounds that attend our partner schools will directly benefit from this project. Through the teacher training part of the project we will also train over 60 local teachers.
