Project information

Appeal 4 Wheels

Hoylake Cottages provides 24 hour nursing, respite and day facilities for older people and those with dementia. Our big idea is buy a new specialised minibus to transport our clients to and from our dementia day facility, Sandhills.

Due to the nature of the project, there are no actual start and end dates. We are aiming to have the new minibus before the end of this financial year.

  • Need

The current minibus is 8 years old and has 170,000 miles on the clock so is in need of replacement. It currently travels over 500 miles a week picking up 80 clients from around the Wirral, providing a vital transport service to our clients and their carers. The current minibus has a lift but does not allow access to larger wheelchairs. Hoylake Cottage currently spends significant sums on repairing the minibus and it is inevitable that these costs will continue to escalate.

A new minibus with an electrical lift will be able to cope with the needs of the wheelchair users and those with poor mobility. It will reduce increasing maintenance costs and mean a reliable mode of transport, ensuring that we continue to provide the vital transport service to our clients and their carers.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To raise funds for a new minibus which is such a vital part of the dementia day facility service.

» Participate in the Big Give Christmas Challenge

    What success will look like

Success will be demonstrated by the delivery of a new minibus!

    Aim 2

To ensure that the clients receive the best possible care which includes a vital transport service

» The clients of Sandhills already receive excellent care from the staff which will be enhanced by the new minibus.

    What success will look like

By existing clients who rely on the transport service continuing to be able to attend the facility, and by extending the transport service to new clients.

    Aim 3

Cause the least amount of disruption to a family that is already under pressure.

» The transport service will ensure clients maintain a routine whilst we continue to provide the essential support and respite to carers.

    What success will look like

Maintaining the transport system ensuring routine to clients and carers of Sandhills, which is vital to the quality of care we provide.

  • Impact

By ensuring Hoylake Cottage maintains this vital transport service, ensuring that it is reliable and efficient, existing clients who rely on the transport service will be able to continue to attend the facility, and the service can be extended to new clients, thereby ensuring that client attendance figures are at least maintained at our dementia day facility.

The only risk that would affect this project is a reduction in the number of clients attending Sandhills due to the lack of a reliable and effective transport service. We have identified this risk and are addressing it with the appeal for funds for a new minibus.

We will report to donors via our newsletter, local press, website and various social networks.

  • Background

The dementia day facility service is based in Sandhills at Hoylake Cottage. The minibus travels 500 miles each week, throughout the Wirral. In Wirral, there is an estimated 4,500 people who have been diagnosed with dementia, at least 2 in 3 of which is cared for at home. Providing the day facility service and ensuring clients can get to the facility is essential to ensure that the sufferer can stay within their family for as long as possible.

Sandhills cares for over 100 clients per week, 80 of which utilise the vital transport service. The minibus has become an integral part of the service and is recognised by the clients as a safe mode of transport to take them to and from the day centre. The carers will also benefit from a reliability aspect, reassured that their relative will be transported to and from Sandhills.
