Trafficking and Exploitation Awareness and support

Young girls and boys, men and women and children are being trafficked from one town to another in the UK, or trafficked from poor countries like Africa and Asia and parts of Eastern Europe to the UK for exploitation. We need to set up a project to raise awareness and support such victims.

  • Need

    Need

Exploitation, particularly of girls is increasingly being recognised at a local and national level. Reports in the UK suggest a rising number of child victims of trafficking are controlled by exploiters using rituals. Traffickers frequently use ritual oaths to make children compliant, preventing them from running away or approaching authorities.

    Solution

Set up a support and information service for young people 16-30 years who have been trafficked or involved in exploitation by any means but in particular use of deception and rituals such as juju and voodoo for purposes of prostitution, exploitation and abuse. We will recruit a Project Coordinator to develop a specialised service for trafficked and exploited young persons who have suffered from organised or ritual abuse. We will raise awareness of our services and access hard to reach victims.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Fewer young girls and boys will be sexually exploited or trafficked in and out of the UK.

    Activities

» Recruit a Worker to develop a specialised service for trafficked and exploited young persons who have suffered from organised or ritual abuse
» Raise awareness of our services and try a variety of ways to reach and gain trust of young people who have been trafficked and exploited or at risk.
» Develop and provide awareness sessions on trafficking and exploitation in schools and other youth organisations.
» Develop a message board to enable young people to discuss freely and anonymously about trafficking and exploitation

More victims phoning our helpline, sending texts and emailing us for support. Increased number of referalls from other abuse support agencies on trafficking and exploitation cases.

  • Impact

    Impact

Fewer young people will be sexually exploited or trafficked. We hope to learn more about how to reach, engage and work effectively with young people in difficult circumstances. We hope to learn and share our learning of the most effective strategies for addressing the issues of trafficking and exploitation of young people. This project will be a learning experience to most support agencies on how to deal with young persons traumatised through trafficking and exploitation. The outcomes will be pu

    Risk

One of the main problems is that the victims are silenced and afraid to speak about what is happening to them. To break this silence they need support from an agency specialised in ritual abuse. This silence protects the abusers but the victims need help to realise this. We have consulted with anti-trafficking and asylum seeker agencies and there is evidence that setting up a support service for trafficked and exploited young persons will enable them to heal from trauma and disclose the abuse.

    Reporting

The outcomes will be published as a guide/support pack to be used by most frontline services/agencies on how to deal with such traumatised young persons.

  • Background

    Location

Izzy's Promise is a charity organisation (SC033706) based in Dundee, Scotland (UK) that offers free and confidential support services to ritual/organised abuse survivors. We offer support services for male and female survivors of ritual/organised abuse across the UK by
consulting with them to find out what suits them best and how they can best be supported.

    Beneficiaries

We will aim to work with trafficked and exploited young persons and their parents and guardians offering support services via telephone, email, face to face or drop in service; We will also aim to recruit and train volunteers and work with support agencies. We will target abuse survivors of trafficking and those who have been trafficked by use of ritual oaths. We will also support survivors of abuse resulting from Female Genital Mutilation and other harmful traditional practices.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We have consulted with anti-trafficking and asylum seeker agencies and there is evidence that setting up a support service for trafficked and exploited young persons will enable them to heal from trauma and disclose the abuse and trafficking. We support young women who have been trafficked and helped them disclose to the relevant authorities. These young women had remained unable to tell about the trafficking prior to getting support from us but we were able to assist them to tell thier abuse.
