  • Need

    Need

The first few months of 2011 have served as a stark reminder of the destructive power of disasters and conflicts: a tsunami devastating Japan, the humanitarian crisis in Côte d’Ivoire forcing hundreds of thousands of families to flee their homes, and most recently the devastating drought in the Horn of Africa.

    Solution

These crises highlight the continuing need for agencies like ActionAid to respond immediately, to provide vital relief supplies to the children and families affected and reduce suffering in the critical days and weeks following a disaster.

Delivering emergency food packages to families who have lost everything
►Delivering non-food items such as blankets, hygiene kits and pots and pans to vulnerable families
►Providing specialist nutrition support for breastfeeding mothers and the elderly

  • Impact

    Impact

We link our emergency response work to ActionAid’s ongoing projects in the region, and we stay there for as long as we are needed, providing practical support and making sure local people have a say in rebuilding their communities and livelihoods.

    Risk

Limited funds will reduce our reach.

    Reporting

For gifts over £1,000 we are happy to send a written report.

ActionAid website is updated regularly with our response to emergencies.

  • Background

    Location

When disaster strikes, ActionAid responds within hours, providing vital things like food and shelter. We respond to emergencies on a global level.

    Beneficiaries

We know that during disasters, vulnerable groups – including women, children, the elderly, ethnic minorities and marginalised communities, people with disabilities and people living with HIV/AIDs – are likely to suffer the most.

That’s why we take sides with the poorest and most excluded – supporting people to address the structural reasons for their continued poverty and vulnerability.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We take a holistic approach to disasters, combining emergency response with programmes and policy work to help people increase a community’s resilience to future disasters.

We work at local, national and international levels, bringing the voices of those affected by disasters to the attention of the people responsible for protecting, promoting and fulfilling their rights.
