Christians Against Poverty
The personal effects of debt can be devastating, ranging from fear and stress to depression - and even suicide (36% of CAP clients admit they considered suicide before seeking help). Families go without food, and homes are put at risk, as clients are pressured to prioritise debt repayments over basic living needs. CAP's centre network expansion is a crucial step towards giving these families in debt a hope and solution.
CAP centres bring about sustainable poverty relief through our unique face to face debt counselling services. We give each client hope and a real solution by working out a budget prioritising food and essential bills and negotiating with creditors to agree to the budget. We offer a CAP Plan to help people practically pay their bills and debts. We also help people through insolvency options if required. This means we can help anyone in debt no matter how severe their debts are.

Activities» Through the expansion of our CAP Debt Centre we will help over 16,000 indviduals tackle debt and poverty each year
» CAP Job CLubs have a higher percentage success rate than any government commissioned work programme and help over 300 people find work a year.
» CAP Release Groups help people tackle life controlling addictions and dependancies such as smoking, drinking and gambling with promising early success
» CAP Life Skills is a pilot we are running to help those from chaotic backgrounds manage household finances, complex products, and cook and shop well.
By reaching 1000 services we aim to have UK coverage and will therefore be able to provide debt counselling to anyone in UK.
Each new service will be relieving poverty by providing a real way out of our clients' poverty. We will know if we have been successful if we achieve our goals of number of clients seen, if over 70% of the clients helped rated the service in the top two categories of ‘life transforming’ or a ‘great help’ in our client questionnaire and if 70 – 90% of clients were able to stick to their budgets.
We open all our services in partnership with local churches because they are on the ground to provide a face to face service and to show God's love in action. There is a risk that not enough churches will be in a position to partner with CAP. In response to feedback, we are diversifying the partnership options in terms of price and level of service provision.
Donors to this project will receive quarterly mailings detailing the ongoing and forthcoming activities and any necessary changes that have been made to the project plans.

We estimate 17,000 people will benefit from our services in a year. Our clients are some of the poorest people in the UK.

CAP is best placed to help those who are the poorest and the most vulnerable in society due to in depth and face to face nature of our service. Over its 19 year history, CAP has helped over 75,000 individuals and its effectiveness has been widely recognised. Most recently CAP won a Debt Advice Provider of the Year Award. 94% of clients say CAP's help is life transforming or a great help.
