Present services include providing shelter and support for people who are homeless and vulnerable. (HP) aims to improve client’s quality of life by providing a range of programmes of care which include: health; hygiene facilities; clothing & bedding; benefit, financial and employment advice/support.

  • Need

    Need

    Harbour Place (HP) is in the East Marsh Ward of Grimsby; a quarter of the population within the area live in neighbourhoods which rank amongst the most deprived areas in the country. There is a history of poor parenting, high unemployment and it is recognised as nationally the worst for education and skills deprivation. HP aims to improve the health of individuals and increase opportunities for employment through engagement and empowerment of individuals who may be considered hard to reach.

    Solution

    HP will provide non-residential, day- to-day services for those who are classed as vulnerable and socially excluded through the provision of 1-1 support from Project Coordinators, access to a Street Outreach Worker, and befriending by 17 voluntary workers who will provide social care such as meals and personal hygiene facilities. Individuals will have access to their own action plans with a clear follow on plan after they become employment ready.

    Aim 1

    To reduce homelessness and support people in their tenancies.

    Activities

    » To give advice and support to clients on homelessness issues and support with sustaining their tenancies.

    Success will be through: monitoring the numbers of individual clients supported with housing advice and support in sustaining their tenancies, and case studies.


    Aim 2

    Improve the health and wellbeing of individuals considered vulnerable or socially excluded.

    Activities

    » Provide free nutritional meals for clients 5 days a week. » Support clients with their healthcare needs including health promotion events.

    Success will be through: monitoring the numbers of individual clients supported with health and substance issues, and through case studies. Recording the number of meals provided.


    Aim 3

    To assist individuals with employability skills necessary to become job ready

    Activities

    » Provide clients/volunteers with employment based training/activities within a healthcare environment.

    Success will be through monitoring the numbers of individual clients supported with health and substance issues, and through case studies. Recording the number of meals provided.


    Aim 4

    Raise awareness of homeless issues in the local community and improve partnership working.

    Activities

    » Raise the awareness of homelessness issues within the local community, through talks, visits, forums and through the local media.

    Success will be through Monitoring the number of people who have benefitted from talks in the area. Keep a record of media marketing materials e.g. photos, news clippings.


  • Impact

    Impact

    The project will provide long-term support to some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged in our community. The support provided will enable clients to be better prepared to deal with the challenges of homelessness, and other associated problems such as social isolation, unemployment, poor general health, mental health, substance, alcohol abuse and crime. The project will provide long-term opportunities to learn skills for readiness into the employment

    Risk

    There is a risk that organisations may diversify and extend services in the local area, causing a duplication of services. This is dealt with by fulfilling our aims of attending all local partnership meetings and forums to ensure a cohesive and transparent service. In addition HP has regular strategic, management, client and volunteer meetings to discuss and address the needs of our service.

    Reporting

    Donors will receive a Year- end Report on the outcomes and effectiveness of the project. The project team will report to Trustees on a bi-monthly basis. Information on the success of the project will be promoted on the HP website, in the local media and other local publications.

  • Background

    Location

    HP opened in December 1996 in response to the needs of the homeless, underprivileged and the more socially excluded members of the community in Grimsby. HP is situated in the East Marsh ward which is classed as being in the bottom 1% most deprived wards in the UK. HP is the only centre of its kind in North East Lincolnshire and is recognised locally as an important part of the community.

    Beneficiaries

    HP benefits individuals in North East Lincolnshire who may be homeless, offenders, substance misusers and/or anyone vulnerable within the community. HP also benefits those who volunteer by providing a rewarding, well supported opportunity to gain experience in the social care field. These include students, those who lack confidence, recovering from physical and mental illness, long-term unemployed, those considering a career change and/or those who are considered socially isolated.

    Why Us?

    HP was the winner of the National Lottery Awards 2009 for best voluntary/charity project. HP has been established for 15 years and is the only centre of its kind in North East Lincolnshire and has proven experience supporting vulnerable, hard to reach people. HP has continued success in addressing issues that are a barrier to employment, due to our ability to engage with clients that are often hard to reach we are ideally placed to offer an holistic support package.

    The Chair was appointed in December 1995. Prior to his retirement during 2002; he was employed by a UK port services company as an Executive Director

    Allen Young

    The Project Director was a senior director with a blue chip International company.His business acumen is ideal for this project

    Dave Carlile

    The Project Coordinator has many years of working with disadvantaged people across N.E. Lincs. and has worked at HP in excess of 7 years.

    Tony Cadwallader

    The Street Outreach Worker has experience in health and social care. He has been associated with HP for over 4 years.
