Disability Community Champions Training Course

To recruit and equip a group of disabled people in North Somerset to become ‘community champions’. The course will teach attendees about the social model and other important elements of 'disability' which forms the first step towards becoming representative voices of the disabled community.

This project would be delivered within 8 months from the time of securing funding. It is a course of 5 sessions which would take place over 10 weeks, plus allowing up to 5 months for preparation (booking trainers, advertising the course etc)

  • Need


    Many disabled people feel they do not have a voice at policy-making level and in recent research (May 2011) members of our North Somerset project stated that they wanted to "be involved in decision-making at local/regional level" as a priority task within the area.
    In order to effect change the voice of disabled people needs to be heard at this level within the local authorities; this training course is the first step on that road to empowerment and having a voice.


    By providing training that builds confidence and empowers people; attendees will feel empowered, some may chose to seek out further opportunities following the course such as a volunteering role, looking to undertake further training to become a representative themselves, etc. This course plays a vital role in laying the foundations towards equipping disabled people to be effective representatives of the disabled community.

    Aim 1

    Provide a training course comprised of 5 sessions for up to 15 people.


    » Course will include: confidence building; understanding disability the Social Model; commonality of issues.

    Inform learners about the Social Model of disability and increase their understanding of equality


    » A range of trainers will be used to provide different aspects of the course.

    Success will be...50% of learners will be willing to move forward into another training course thinking about a representation role

    Increase confidence/self-esteem of individuals


    » Self-evaluation tools will be used by the learners to measure changes in confidence, skills, etc

    Success will be...25% of learners will actively seek volunteering opportunities as a result of this course.

    Increase learners ability to understand their potential, reflect and evaluate


    » Learners will maintain a course portfolio for future reference for themselves which will also illustrate personal development

    Success will be... All learners will have created a personal portfolio that can be used as a reference tool

  • Impact


    Ultimately we aim that North Somerset will have trained and empowered disability community champions that will be sitting on panels and boards within the local authorities and ensuring the voice of disabled people is heard which the wider community will benefit from. This is the first step towards this aim.


    A full assessment has been completed and we have identified some potential risks, such as our own and funder's reputational risks, and resource risks to deliver the programme. These will be dealt with by ensuring that a detailed work plan is in place, the budget is considered in all purchasing decisions, relevant insurances are in place, consistent monitoring is undertaken and contingency plans are considered in advance


    A project work plan which details tasks, deadlines and budgets will be drawn up and agreed. These plans are reviewed bi-monthly at Team Meetings and would be forwarded to the funders.

  • Background


    North Somerset is a small county with a unitary council, the 145 square miles (approx) is predominantly rural with a few urban centres. Compass Disability Network In North Somerset was established as a project during 2010 with some initial funding from the Department of Health and North Somerset Council, however due to budget cuts we presently do not have any funding to deliver services within the area.


    The course can accommodate up to 15 learners; all will be volunteers who are committed to taking part in the full course. These individuals will benefit from learning about the Social Model and become empowered to have their voice heard. In the long term we hope this will bring benefits for the disabled community at large as well as enable the local authority to make better informed decisions.

    Compass Disability Services is a user-led organisation, established over 10 years ago. We have a proven track record of designing and delivering training courses tailored to the needs of disabled people and have already delivered a course of this nature in Somerset which led to 10 Disability Community Champions becoming representatives. Our mission is to enable disabled people to have equality of opportunity, and a course such as this would directly contribute towards this ultimate aim.
