  • Need

    Need

Targeting under achievement in 12-16 year old Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) young people from Highfields, Leicester.
There is a high rate of underachievement in education, with the ONS recording 36% of pupils achieving 5 or more A*-C grade passes, including English and Maths, at GCSE or equivalent in 2008 – 2009 (as compared to a Leicester average of 43% and national average of 51%). Moreover, 49.9% of Spinney Hills populace have no formal qualifications.

    Solution

Inspiration. Students will inevitably benefit from the tutoring academy. A correlation between participation and improved grades at school is expected. Will also expose them to the positive role models, who will guide, inspire and motivate them into higher education.
Improve their character and behaviour through an environment that promotes good behaviour. Also time spent on a Sunday afternoon in an environment they can flourish within as opposed to wasting time on the streets.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To help young people by developing their skills, capacities and capabilities.

    Activities

» Working with 40 children aged 11-16 each week, structured lessons are offered in Maths and Science. Class sizes are limited to 10 students.

An examination will be carried out every 3 months to assess progress in all the defined domains that we have laid out in line with the national curriculum.

  • Impact

    Impact

Inspiration. Students will inevitably benefit from the tutoring academy. A correlation between participation and improved grades at school is expected. Will also expose them to the positive role models, who will guide, inspire and motivate them into higher education.
Enable their parents to get involved through a regular programme of participation, and thereby extending the positive influence into their homes.

    Risk

    - Not enough students - we have built up links with local schools/institutes whereby they will promote our academy.
    - Parents not being able to afford the academy - we are running all services voluntarily, i.e. no cost.
    - Centre is unable to accommodate - we undertake 3 monthly bookings with the centre. We have an agreement with a centre down the road should we ever need,
    - Poor student attendance - 3 absences in a 12 week period results in expulsion.

    Reporting

    - a Quarterly report of our services. What exactly we are providing, and where all the money is being used with properly kept accounts attached.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We have access to many professionals from various fields who have been brought up in the area. Therefore they are able to relate to the youth, and help them tackle the same problems they encountered a few years ago. The volunteers have all done very well and attained higher education degrees, so will have plenty to offer.
