Mintfest - International Festival of Street Arts

Mintfest is an international festival of outdoor arts that takes place annually in the market town of Kendal, Cumbria. It brings the town alive with shows that are mostly free and take place in public spaces.

However - because of a gap in funding we need your help to ensure it can happen in 2014.

  • Need


    Mintfest has been running for 7 years & has built up a huge reputation with local audiences and on the international street arts scene. Due to public sector cuts, and the demise of the Northwest Development Agency (a major funder), the budget for Mintfest is always under pressure. We want to provide audiences with the level of quality and range of performances that they now expect in order to continue to deliver greater social/economic benefit


    After previous successful challenges, this campaign is to help plug some of the gap in the Mintfest 2014 budgets to ensure it can offer the high quality experience that audiences now expect, to protect it for future years and to maximise the social and economic impacts it can achieve. It will also help develop relationships with new and existing donors to help make the festival sustainable for future years. We aim to raise a total of £40,000 through on-going fundraising activities

    Aim 1

    To take great art to everyone and develop new audiences for the arts


    » Creating and presenting a festival of memorable, quirky, inspiring and mostly free events featuring the very best international performers and artists
    » By exploring and reaching into the widest range of places, public spaces and landscapes across Kendal.
    » By presenting free work outdoors, in public spaces, removing some of the key barriers to attendance.

    Success will be measured on delivering a high quality festival in 2014 and through audience surveys which will measure audience numbers, demography and previous arts attendance.

    Aim 2

    To support the development of new and emerging street artists


    » by running the Mintfest International Summer School for Street Arts at least biennially - the only one of its kind in the UK
    » by offering students and young people opportunities to gain performing experience at Mintfest

    Success will be measured by the numbers of students successfully participating in Mintfest.

    Aim 3

    To support the creation and touring of new work by British artists in Cumbria & nationally


    » by commissioning new work and supporting its creation
    » by showcasing the commissioned work within Mintfest in front of promoters from around the world.
    » by working with commissioned artists and companies to secure bookings beyond the Lakes through its partnerships across the UK and Europe

    Success will be measured by the number of new commissions showcased at Mintfest and monitoring their progress and bookings beyond the festival.

    1. New audiences for the arts in Cumbria
    2. An economic benefit of approx £1.5m per annum
    3. An increase in new street arts performances through Mintfest summer school and commissioned work
    4. More developed emerging artists who have been given the opportunity to develop professionally

    All changes will be demonstrated through an ongoing research project run independently. This includes a variety of methodologies to gather data about the impacts.


    The main risk is currently the lack of availability of public monies to support the arts. However, we have a very successful track record in funding and continue to focus our efforts on this. Recently we were successful in a bid to Arts Council England and are now one of their portfolio organisations meaning we have funding secure from them until 2015. This campaign is part of a wider public fundraising campaign to enable us to develop new relationships with existing and new donors


    We will produce an annual evaluation report for Lakes Alive (of which Mintfest is a part) and quarterly reports detailing progress and activity as well as any changes made to the plans.

  • Background


    Kendal, Cumbria. Cumbria is a large and sparcely populated rural county in the NorthWest and has a broad demographic, including some pockets of high deprivation.

    Its main industry it tourism which festivals and events like Mintfest make a significant contribution to.


    1. Audiences of approx 25000 people (local and visitors), including those from areas of deprivation (our research indicated a broad range across all demographics attend Mintfest)
    2.Local businesses, who benefit from the spend of those visiting the area for Mintfest, parcularly accommodation providers/food/drink outlets/shops
    3. Other local suppliers who provide goods and services to the organisers/event
    4. Commissioned artists/companies and their future audiences
    5. Local people as staff

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

    Manchester International Arts (MIA) has been delivering arts events for almost 20 years and is widely considered to be one of the leading organisations delivering outdoor arts in the UK. For Mintfest it works in Partnership with Kendal Arts International (KAI), creating a dynamic partnership of the artistic expertise of MIA with the local networks/partners, fundraising knowledge, marketing and events management at KAI. They have been running Mintfest successfully for five years.

    Artistic Director - Jeremy has over 20 years experience of programming and presenting outdoor arts.

    Julie Tait

    Director - Julie is an experienced arts professional and was recently selected as one of 50 'Women to Watch' by the Cultural Leadership Programme.
