  • Need

    Need

Milton Keynes Hospital’s Neonatal Unit cares for all babies that are born too early (premature) and babies that are unwell after they are born. As one in ten babies in and around Milton Keynes is born prematurely, the Unit needs to undergo a redevelopment to meet an increasing demand for our specialist services. This is even more important as Milton Keynes is a growing, new city, with an above average increase in young families.

    Solution

In response to this need for additional cots and space, the Milton Keynes Hospital Charity launched the Little Lives Appeal. A redevelopment of the Unit will create additional space and allow us to enhance our family-friendly facilities.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To redesign and redevelopment the hospital's Neonatal Unit.

    Activities

» To purchase an additional three cots for premature, small and ill babies, taking the total from 18 to 21.
» To redevelopment the cot areas of the Unit, creating more space.
» To redevelop the parent areas in the Unit, providing enhanced facilities for parents to stay overnight and bond with their baby.
» To provide equipment of the latest technical specification, enhance staff facilities and create a new, more spacious reception area.

Success will be raising £250,000 to fund the complete redevelopment of the Unit.

  • Impact

    Impact

Having an enchanced and more spacious Neonatal Unit will essentially mean we no longer have to send babies to other hospitals when the Unit is working to full capacity. Parents will have an improved space to stay, creating a much better environment for mother and baby to bond.

    Risk

There is a risk that we will not meet our target by March 2012. We have dealt with this by making sure our donors and supporters have good, close relationships with the hospital and also setting up a carefully-planned programme of events throughout the year to encourage further support.

    Reporting

Supporters of the Little Lives Appeal will receive a Fundraising e-bulletin, a newsletter and can visit our website for more details. We will also have regular features in the local newspapers and radio, and encourage donors to come in and meet the Unit staff.
