The Architecture Foundation Junior Fellowship

The AF would like to establish a Junior Fellowship scheme to give 3 talented young people the opportunity to become key members of our team and gain curatorial and management experience over one year (part-time). The scheme will provide the Junior Fellows with a modest income during their placement.

    Need

    According to figures released by the CEBR, 52% of last year’s university-leavers were unemployed or under-employed six months after graduating. A record number of students; 320,000, have graduated this summer which suggests up to 64,000 of these are currently facing unemployment. The Junior Fellowship programme will not only offer talented young people a paid placement, but it will also enable them to gain essential transferable skills that will facilitate their future employability.

    Solution

    The AF Junior Fellowship will provide a formal means by which to identify and nurture new talent, benefiting both the Fellows and our organisation in terms of diversity of candidates, longevity of placement and increased level of engagement. This paid Fellowship will attract a more diverse range of candidates and provide a proactive way to tackle current unemployment issues, enabling young people to further explore a professional field of interest, whilst receiving some financial support.

    Aim 1

    Tackle youth unemployment

    Activities

    » Fellows will be paid the national minimum wage appropriate to their age group, providing a springboard to full time work.

    Success will be to engage young graduates in the fellowship who are just beginning their careers and looking for valuable professional experience.


    Aim 2

    Increase diversity of applicants.

    Activities

    » Providing financial support will encourage a more diverse range of candidates than an expenses-only internship.

    Success will be receiving a wide range of applications from young people of a variety of backgrounds and ethnicities.


    Aim 3

    Increase longevity and quality of placements.

    Activities

    » Fellows will shadow staff members through structured programme of activities and goals, gaining insight into operations and integration with core team

    Success will be being able to work with the fellows for at least six months to a maximum of a year increasing levels of engagement between the fellows and the AF staff.


  • Impact

    Impact

    The AF Junior Fellowship programme will encourage longevity of placements, increasing the stability of the organisation as a whole and enhancing programme continuity and staff retention. The Fellowship may also identify and cultivate potential candidates for more permanent at the AF, ideally diversifying the team. We will demonstrate the success of the Fellowship not only through the project evaluation mentioned above but also by monitoring the impact on peer organisations’ best practice.

    Risk

    In the past, the AF has experienced difficulties in recruiting suitable candidates for internship opportunities. A longer recruitment period of 3 months will ensure that suitably wide networks are activated to source the most talented and deserving candidates. We will seek to explore broader avenues of recruitment and create new recruitment packs to distribute to potential candidates.

    Reporting

    A designated blog will sit within the AF website, charting the Fellows’ experiences and achievements during their placements. Updates on the Fellows will also appear regularly within monthly e-shots. Donors will also have the opportunity to liaise with the Fellows in person at key AF events.

  • Background

    Location

    The Fellowship will be based at the AF’s headquarters on Tooley Street in Southwark, London. Fellows will have the chance to work within the AF’s office and Project Space – as well as within a range of external venues such as the Barbican and Tate Modern where our off-site programme of events takes place. During the London Festival of Architecture (Summer 2012) the Fellows will have the opportunity of working in sites around the capital.

    Beneficiaries

    The main direct beneficiaries of the project, in terms of experience, skills gained and financial support, will be the Junior Fellows. AF staff and audiences will also benefit from the Fellows’ work. By sharing the project through a dedicated blog, AF’s social networks and monthly email updates, we hope to make the Fellowship a model of best practice for peer organisations across the UK.
