  • Need

Children affected by cancer of family or friends often have muddled emotions around the cancer and related events that they are unable to express. Often it's hard to find child appropriate ways to explain to children what is going on and often communication within the home is strained through fear of how to discuss certain issues

Our Child therapists will help children from age 2-teenagers to understand events and their feelings by using age appropriate activities - drawing, role playing, dolls/ puppets memory books and letters. They are able to help providing answers to difficult questions relating to the cancer and possible outcomes in a non threatening way. The therapist also can work with family members to help them be able to communicate better in the home so issues don't fester or escalate

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To help children understand events going on around them

» Using age appropriate techniques the Therapist works with child to explain events in a non scary/ threatening manner

    What success will look like

Success will be children who have an appropriate level of understanding of the events around them. Parents will know if the therapy is helping their child through their behaviour

    Aim 2

Helping children to express their often muddled feelings towards the cancer of their loved one

» Through age appropriate activities - playing, games, drawing, role playing or informal (confidential)chatting children can express their emotions.

    What success will look like

Success will bemeasured by recommendation of other children in the same situation to Chai's child therapy service

    Aim 3

Improve communication in the home around issues related to the cancer and beyond

» Through working with the child and the parents separately the therapist can help to open up lines of communication around difficult issues

    What success will look like

Success will be evident if parties are more comfortable, willing and have the verbal tools to openly discuss appropriate issues in the home

    Aim 4

Enable parents to explain events to their children

» By providing parents the tools and words to answer their children's questions about cancer and possible outcomes in an appropriate manner

    What success will look like

Success will be parents feeling more equipped to explain events to their children in a child appropriate way

  • Impact

By tackling mixed emotions, poor communication and pent up feelings early and before they fester this project can help to prevent long term emotional issues arising. Long term success can be demonstrated by quantifying future recommendations to the child therapy service and evaluating clients' response to Chai after a number or months/ years

The child therapist might uncover other unrelated psychological issues when working with the child. Chai works closely with other multi-disciplinary services and can refer where necessary clients to other appropriate services

Chai can provide regular reports to donors quantifying service usage and developments. However, as confidentiality is of paramount importance any case studies must maintain anonymity of client's identities
