East Africa Emergency Appeal
Droughts across East Africa have left more than 10 million people in urgent need of humanitarian aid. ActionAid is responding in some of the most severely affected areas, providing emergency food and water supplies, and helping communities get back on their feet as soon as possible.
Charity information: ActionAid
The severe drought across East Africa has left more than 10 million people on the brink of starvation with some areas experiencing the driest conditions in 60 years.
Bijay Kumar, ActionAid’s Head of Emergencies in Kenya, said: “We are on the brink of a catastrophe for millions of people unless we urgently get funds to step up our work. We know that some families are eating only one meagre meal a day and children are dropping out of school to help their families search for water."
We are providing immediate food and water relief to the most vulnerable – including women, children and the elderly.
We are also supporting school feeding programmes so children can get a nourishing daily meal and an incentive to stay in school. And we are working to install water boreholes for communities which either lack basic water infrastructure or where the existing structures have broken down.
To provide communities with emergency water and food supplies in Northern Kenya.
Activities» Providing food and water relief to communities – immediate food and water relief for the most vulnerable community members.
» Supporting school feeding programmes – to ensure children are well nourished and they can stay in school.
» Surplus livestock will be bought from farmers, and the meat redistributed to the most vulnerable beneficiaries for immediate food needs.
What success will look like
Success will be... Providing emergency water and food to communities in the worst effected areas of Northern Kenya, and increasing community resilience to drought in the long term.
We will work to ensure that communities have long-term access to water, and that families have the resources they need to recover. We will:
► Install water boreholes - we will fix or install water boreholes, providing a long term solution to water shortages.
► Install drip irrigation systems – ensuring a regular water supply to crops all year round
► Provide seed inputs – so families can be better prepared when the rains do arrive
ActionAid has already helped more than 194,000 people with emergency food supplies, water, and income generating schemes, but we are on the brink of a catastrophe for millions of people unless we urgently get funds to step up our work.
We include updates on our website and produce six monthly reports.

ActionAid is responding in 5 districts in Northern Kenya. These are some of the most severely affected areas where the situation is considered a humanitarian emergency.
Our response will target the most severely affected and vulnerable community members – in this case, women, children, the elderly and people living with HIV and AIDS. These groups are not only more susceptible to changes in their diet, but are most at risk of being marginalised when there is competition for resources. We will work with communities to identify the most vulnerable individuals and families.
ActionAid Kenya is operational in the target areas with established local partnerships and strong links to the affected communities. We have established systems, infrastructure and social capital required to implement this intervention quickly and effectively. Having worked in these regions for over 20 years, we understand the context and dynamics of communities, enabling us to provide a suitable and effective response.
