Child Sexual Exploitation

Street Teams works with young people at risk of, or affected by, sexual exploitation, grooming and trafficking. Offering specialist support services, skills and character based workshops and 1:1 sessions, enabling young people to break the cycles of abuse and raise their awareness.

  • Need

    Need

    Young people are unaware of the danger and risk they are putting themselves in and being subjected to perpetrators. They are unaware of the risk to Internet grooming and inappropriate relationships and their own sexualised behaviour.

    Solution

    Raise the awareness of young people to the exploitation taking place in their relationships. Equip young people with the confidence and self-esteem to say no to exploitation.

    » run workshops once a week for ten weeks alongside 1:1 support sessions for young people.
    » run training days in recognising sexual exploitation to local professionals and community groups

    This will be demonstrated through case studies, a portfolio of work carried out in workshops and charted to show distance travelled.

    Risk

    Clients not wanting to engage with the project - referral form will indicate various contacts and links to young person.
    The pull / push factor being too great with perpetrators allowing young people to engage with services.
    Professionals not correctly identifying young people at risk - training provided.

    Reporting

    case studies of the distance travelled by the client are written up and sent as reports to donors. monitoring and case notes are written up on a bespoke database.

  • Background

    Location

    Walsall contains many areas of deprivation and anti-social behaviour with high levels of crime.
    The building where the project is located is on the route originally called "The Golden Mile" where the sex industry operates.

    Young people between the ages of 8 - 18

    Support and information sharing with Police and Safeguarding in respect of disclosures by young people.

    Why Us?

    Street Teams is a specialist provider of services to this client group.
    We have worked in the arena for over ten years and have established good working practices with both voluntary and statutory agencies.
    We carry out return interviews for the police in respect of young people who go missing - these are often known to us already.
    We will adapt to the client need, look at long-term involvement and are non-judgmental. Professional workers present as youth workers to engage effectively.
