Rehabilitation Centre Brazil
The rehabilitation centre assists local people in Taquara in Rio de Janeiro who come from backgrounds of prostitution, drug and alcohol problems or are homeless. At the centre they receive accommodation, food, clothing, medical and psychological help, therapy, education and learn new skills.
People who grow up in the favelas and the poorer parts of Rio often don't receive adequate education that will allow them to find work later on in life. They are usually caught up in a criminal environment and the drug scene and often end up in prostitution. Many don't survive past their teens. There is little support in Rio for these people as most social services are over-demanded and under-financed. If nothing is done, this cycle continues from generation to generation.
Firstly the rehab centre provides a place where all physical needs of the adults are met. The centre also provides work shops and basic reading and writing classes. This prepares and enables the people to reintegrate back into society without having to revert back to their old life style. We accompany them in the first few months to make sure they find employment and accommodation. The centre also provides emotional assistance, pastoral care and help in reconciliation with their families.
To provide a safe home for adults caught in an environment of drugs and prostitution.
Activities» Improve the facilities that we already have by upgrading the kitchen and washing facilities and build extra dormitories.
» Plant fruit trees and a vegetable garden and a fish lake in order to help the centre and the students become self-sustainable.
Success will be for the centre to be fully finished and furnished with all that the people need and for it to run being fully self-sustainable.
To help the adults regain a sense of security, purpose, dignity and emotional health.
Activities» Providing pastoral care and meeting all their physical needs by clothing, feeding and housing them.
» We host a '12 Steps Programme', work with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Psychologists to help overcome addictions and destructive behaviour.
» We work closely together with the families of the students and run monthly workshops for them to help reconcile and build a strong support network.
Success will be when an adult that has gone through the full 9 months of the programme being completely clean of drugs and alcohol and having learned a skill.
To teach skills that will enable the adults to rejoin society, being able to work and provide.
Activities» Teach basic skills like reading and writing, baking, gardening, crafts, painting and other workshops.
» Provide assistance during their first 3 months outside the rehab to ensure they find work, accommodation and the support of their families.
Success will be when an adult finds employment and accomodation after the programme and is consequently able to provide for him and his family.
The long term changes the project will bring about is firstly within the families of the course participants. Helping one member of the family through life-controlling issues, often restores the whole family and helps set their children up for a more promising future. The project also has a great impact on the wider community and will enable more peace, less violence, crime and substance abuse as there's help and support available and people witness the change.
The biggest risk at the moment is the lack of financial support given towards the project. The men have started to plant trees and a garden behind the centre and workshops for crafts, so that the centre can in future become mostly self-sufficient and won't have to rely on sponsors and donations for its day to day running costs. The project has successfully run for 10 years now and gained great respect within the community and partners like bakeries, fishmongers and others to support the work.
We will send quarterly reports with updates, photos and finance used. We will share testimonies of the people in the centre, progress on the building work and should there be any imminent changes, we will communicate inbetween reports.

The project is located right in the heart of Taquara in Rio de Janeiro/Brazil. Taquara is a middle class area in the West of Rio with over 100,000 people living there in about 40,000 households. Even though it is a middle class area, there are overwhelming needs, poverty, crime, substance abuse and prostitution as in most parts of Rio. Taquara is growing daily with immigrants from the north and the poorer countryside which poses an enormous challenge to Rio's city council and social services.
The people benefiting from the project are firstly adult men who grew up in the criminal environment of the Taquara district of Rio in Brazil. As we endevour to work with the entire family of the participants, they all benefit from the project and our work as whole families are being restored and reconciled. The men are brought to a place where they are able to care and provide for their families for the first time which has also an enormous effect on the entire community and future generations.
Our founder Ragbhir Ram regularly travels to Brazil and other parts of the developing world to visit and assist the projects there. Another Trustee is Brazilian and one staff member has also lived in a favela in Rio to work with the community there. Each one brings a different set of expertise into the charity's work. We are committed to changing lives, one at a time. We have been involved in this type of work as a charity for only 2 years but as individuals each for over 10 years and more.
