Children's School and Safe House
Creating a safe environment for the children in Rio's most infamous shanty town, the 'City of God' to learn, grow and play. The Safe House is a place of shelter, safety and warmth, providing support and education for children from deprived families.
Charity information: Jairah Funds
The "City of God" is one of the most infamous shanty towns, known for its violence. Living conditions in certain pockets of this favela are mostly controlled by drug lords and gangsters and this has a very detrimental effect on the lives of the inhabitants, especially the children who, if they have little or no family unit, are usually caught up in a criminal environment. Once caught in the vicious cycle of crime, violence and drugs, they often don't make it past their teen years.
Deusdette, a highly qualified and committed lady, together with 2 other teachers have set up the Safe House, providing a safe haven for the children in the favela where they can learn basic skills in a fun and sheltered environment and learn a different way of life, breaking the vicious cycle they find themselves in. Deusdette works with a whole team of Psychotherapists, Nutritionist and workshop teachers to provide a whole service for the children and their families.
Providing a safe place for the children that is free of violence and drugs.
Activities» Finishing the upper floor onto the safe house for extra workshops and more room for additional children.
» Teaching the children good morals and a different way of living in a fun and playful way that'll help them understand how to make good choices.
Success will be seeing the children free from any criminal involvement and substance abuse.
Providing educational, physical and psychological aid.
Activities» The children receive basic education, computer skills, dance/music and arts workshops and help with homework.
» They also receive counselling, speech and psychotherapy to help overcome many of the traumas experienced.
Success will be for the children to be in a healthy mental and emotional state with basic skills for good job prospects and confidence for the future.
Reaching out to the families of the children to help create a safe and stable home.
Activities» Good communication with the parents and practical help where possible.
» Involvement of the families in as many activities of the children as possible.
Success will be for the parents or guardians to come to a place of healthy moral values and a sense of responsibility and ability to provide a safe home & support for the children.
Bringing lasting change to a community caught in a vicious cycle is our long term goal. We will have achieved true success when the children who came to the safe house will start impacting the lives of others around them, giving them hope, answers and solutions to a different way of life. When we see the principles working outside the safe house, we know we truly succeeded. There are already many testimonies of lives changed and we trust to keep building many more.
The highest risk lies within drawing the children out of the criminal environment. If they were a vital asset within the drug cartel, they usually don't let them go easily but we have seen time and time again the children breaking free and we have built solid relationships within the community and a very good support structure. The community knows and respects our work as they have seen the positive effects on the children and their families.
We will report quarterly with updates and Newsletters, personal testimonies and photos of the children. Should there be any imminent changes, the donors will be notified inbetween the regular updates.

The project is located in the heart of one of the most infamous places in Rio de Janeiro/Brazil - the favela "City of God". In recent years, the favela has been pacified in an attempt to drive out the heavily armed drug lords in order to make it safer for the 2016 Olympics - but poverty, crime and substance abuse are still prevalent. These surroundings and the breakdown of the family nucleus doesn't provide a healthy environment for the children to grow up safely and flourish.
The beneficiaries will be young children, teenage mothers and the immediate families of the children. The children's performance in school drastically improves through the input they receive at the Father's House, their aggression levels drop and they also have a positive impact on their friends, immediate environment and therefore the wider community.

"Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, that is a much greater hunger and poverty than the person who has nothing to eat."
