Rebuild Butansi Primary School in Uganda

Our project aims to assit education in Uganda by building 4 new teachers' houses at Butansi in order to attract and retain the best available teaching staff, thereby increasing academic achievements at the primary school.

  • Need


    The population of Uganda is exploding and will, at the present rate, double in 20 years. The land cannot sustain the impoverished rural inhabitants, so education is vital to give children the opportujnity to escape poverty.


    Good teachers provide quality education. If there is no accommodation on site then the school has to rent rooms locally which costs money, valuable money that could be spent on teaching aids and equipment. Also the teachers are spending time walking to and from school when they could be marking books or preparing lessons. If the school has boarders, then the teachers are needed for evening work.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    Build teachers' accommodation for 4/5 teachers. At present no teachers live at the school.


    » Attract and retain good quality staff.
    » The pupil attendance improves, thus the academic standard improves.
    » Supervision is enhanced which again leads to academic improvement.
    » With the teachers living on site security is better and there is no excuse in the morning for the teachers being delayed.

    What success will look like

    Success will be judged by attracting required number of good quality teachers which will attract higher enrolment.

    Aim 2

    Refurbish 4 classrooms and supply 40 x 3 seater desks


    » There are 4 classrooms in state of disrepair. The roof needs repairing, walls need plastering and floor concreting, plus blackboards need installing
    » Children are seated on the dirty dusty floor which is not conducive to learning. Using their knees as desks.
    » When the floors are not concreted, because many children have no shoes, they suffer from jiggers Many children at this school have jiggers.

    What success will look like

    Success will be judged by the improved academic results, the ultimate measure of success, as a result of more conducive learning facilities.

    Aim 3

    Construct 8 x latrines. Their present 5 latrines are overstretched and filing rapidly.


    » Too few latrines present a health hazard.
    » The number of latrines at present are inadequate for 450 pupils plus teaching and support staff.
    » The school must be able to provide separate male and female latrines in order to satisfy the school inspectors.

    What success will look like

    Success will be a healthier school environment which again creates improved academic results

  • Impact


    In Uganda primary school teachers are allocated by the government and higher enrolment means more teachers, which in turn will produce good academic results. Children can then progress to higher education, eventually gaining employment to lift themselves ouf of the poverty into which they were born.


    The main risks come from weak leadership. The HvSMF monitors progress in all of the 21 schools it supports, in order to assess the success of each project. It is very obvious if the head teacher is not a leader: listless staff, poor attendance and unkempt facitlies. A reporting system has already been devised so that educational authorities receive updates. If a school under preforms, we request action from the DEO, or we stop any future funding.


    Now that digital photography, email and text messaging is available, we keep in touch with the project manager and head teacher throughout the projects. Also the trustees and our UK operations director visit every school annually in March.

  • Background


    The area north of the town of Jinja, in south east Uganda, is rural with many villages surviving on subsistence farming. The government offers free primary education, but many of the schools are in poor condition with lessons conducted without any buildigs under the shade of trees. The children frequently only have a brick to sit on. It is a very poor region of Uganda.


    The children of Butansi village will have a much improved school, giving them the incentive to get an education and the chance to escape the poverty trap. The school curently has an enrolment of
    450 pupils.

    Why Us?

    Since we built our first classroom in Bupadhengo Primary School in 2004 we have raised enough cash to have now funded projects in 21 schools. Our methods are simple and our team on the ground experienced in building quality facilities which are regularly monitored. We form a partnership with the schools and watch them grow and flourish. We are in constant communication with the head teachers advising and encouraging them. We are still working with all the schools that we have helped.

    John has worked with us for 8 years. He is an excellent team leader and looks after the various builders producing quality workmanship.

    David liaises with Sam. He encourages the community to look after the builders by providing lunch and helping with manual tasks.
