  • Need

Deptford X is a visual arts organisation, established in 1998 and located in one of the UK ’officially deprived’ areas
Our work helps to tackle some of the main social and economic issues in the area.
    Our research from 2010 shows:
    • 59% of businesses questioned so an increase in profits during Deptford X (no one saw a decrease)
    • 93% of those questioned said that Deptford X had a positive impact on the area
    • 89% of respondents felt that art can have a positive affect on the locality

We are seeking to run a community and education programme with professional artists working with the local community and schools to create new work that will be exhibited during Deptford X 2012.
We aim to work with 100 people from the local community to create new work.
Through our programme we aim to show the benefit the arts has on mental well being, whilst also helping to unlock the creative potential of the participants and giving them a chance to see their work exhibited at Deptford X.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To run a community and education residence programme for Deptford X 2012

» To run 5 residency programmes for local community groups and schools in Deptford to create new work that will be exhibited during Deptford X 2012.
» To involve the schools and community groups in planning the residencies and selecting the visual art form they want to work in.

    What success will look like

Success will be an artist working with 3 school / community groups to produce new work that will be exhibited during Deptford X 2012.

  • Impact

Deptford X aims to inspire more people to take part in arts activities as participants and audiences.
We want to help dispel myths about Deptford, raise the area’s profile and help boost the local economy.
Our success can be seen through the rigorous monitoring and evaluation we undertake of audiences, businesses, schools, residents and artists.
Success will show an increase in revenue for local businesses and 5-10% growth in audience numbers per annum over the next three years.

There is a risk that we may not be able to attract the total funding required to meet our ambitions. If the full funding isn’t received then we will have to downscale the project, which could result in a loss of quality and staff re-organisation.
Deptford X could be seen as producing the same style of work year on year. To counter this we contract different lead artists / curators each year who develop different themes for Deptford X.

Donors will receive e-newsletters providing regular updates.
All donors will be invited to the launch of Deptford X 2012 and will have access to the final evaluation report.
The names of all donors will be listed on the Deptford X website.

  • Background

Deptford has a rich cultural history with the largest concentration of visual artists per square foot in London.
It is located in one of the most official deprived areas of the UK with the largest public housing estate in Lewisham. Lone parent families make up 18% of all households, the highest rate in London. The health of people in Lewisham is generally worse than the UK average.
Deptford has the lowest percentage of households (6%) where someone has attended an arts venue in the last year.

Deptford X helps introduce schools and local residents to contemporary visual arts both as participants and audience members.
We provide a space for artists to exhibit work in unique and non-traditional settings, such as public spaces, empty shops and the side of refuse trucks.
Local businesses benefit from increased revenue streams during Deptford X.
We provide audiences with the opportunity to see some of the best contemporary visual arts in a diverse environment.
