  • Need

    Need

There is currently a widening gap between Jewish, Muslim, pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli communities in the UK. The grievances held by these communities concerning what is happening in Israel and Palestine, often result in conflict and exclusion for them in the UK, and the divisions become even deeper whenever there is an internationally reported incident in the region. Yet very little is currently being done to address this specific issue.

    Solution

The conflict resolution and leadership workshops, discussion groups, and meetings with Israelis and Palestinians teach participants to express their views in a way that enables them to reach through the prejudices of other parties. They are also equipped to take the lead in mediation and education within their own communities. This will lead to greater tolerance between groups, and consensus around a constructive response to the conflict.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Equip students and teachers to tackle prejudice and intolerance.

    Activities

» Schools session teaching principles of conflict resolution based on an interstanding of positions and interests, including Q&A with our youth leaders.
» Follow up support and further training for students and teachers who want to engage more with the issue, plus an online support network.

Success will be establishing student leaders to run continued events on this issue in their school, and positive reports from teachers about changed student attitudes.

    Aim 2

Increase understanding and acceptance between the UK's Jewish and Muslim communities.

    Activities

» Conflict resolution training session for mosque, synagogue and church groups, including meeting young Israelis and Palestinians.
» Leadership training for individuals who want to take the role of facilitating further activities within their own communities.

Success will be trained individuals organising conflict resolution/discussion events autonomously within their own communities and continuing dialogue with other communities.

    Aim 3

Open communication between British young people and OneVoice’s youth leaders in Israel and Palestine

    Activities

» Week-long tours where youth leaders visit the UK, speaking at community events and meeting community members.
» Online facility for ongoing communication between British community members and OneVoice youth leaders.

Success will be regular, constructive communications between those plugged into the network, especially at times of heightened tension in Israel and Palestine.

  • Impact

    Impact

As a long term measure, the programme is designed to protect and educate those (particularly young people) who are vulnerable to radicalisation as a result of political and religious idealism. Such radicalism thrives in closed communities and restricted mind-sets. The creation of space at school to discuss grievances and beliefs in an open and educational setting makes it much more difficult for radicalism to get a hold.

    Risk

Delicacy of relationship between schools and parents (objections to addressing this issue in schools) - Offer pre-session ‘parent groups’ to answer any questions they may have about the programme and provide clear literature for parents, outlining the curriculum content and aims

Infiltrating more closed areas of communities - Train moderates to reach their own community members, and make use of our existing, influential contacts in these communities

    Reporting

  • Background

    Location

Britain's two major cities, London and Birmingham, have large populations of people from a Muslim or Jewish background, and also large numbers of practising Christians. These communities often live in close proximity to each other, especially in the north west part of London, and southern areas of Birmingham. Manchester and Leeds are two cities for expansion in years two and three of the project.

    Beneficiaries

School pupils from the ages of 15 to 18 from all religious backgrounds and none, and those responsible for their care and education; University students from all religious backgrounds and none, and those responsible for their care and education; Student groups and other youth organisations; Religious communities (Jewish, Christian and Muslim adults) in areas of London and Birmingham with high Muslim and/or Jewish populations.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Interfaith groups are doing a lot of good work between these religious communities, but they tend to avoid addressing the political grievances that arise, and we have received feedback from them that this issue often hinders their interfaith activities. Where they lack the resources and experience to tackle the issue head-on, OVE has the capacity to bring first-hand information from the region of conflict and provide the expertise to lead and equip people through in-depth discussion and training
