Volunteer Coordinator

To recruit and train a Volunteer Coordinator who will manage existing volunteers, recruit and train volunteers to provide befrienders for Carers and a sitting service to enable Carers to take a break. Taking a break allows Carers to look after their own health, sustaining the role for longer.

  • Need

    Need

Carers are often carrying out their role unrecognised and without support. Unsupported Carers can experience poor health reducing their ability to sustain their role. They also experience social isolation, and increased frustration. Many Carers do not recognise themselves as Carers, merely a partner, son or daughter, parent or friend.

    Solution

Our befrienders are able to relieve social isolation, provide emotional support, and empathise with the frustrations experienced by those in the caring role. Our sitting service enables Carers to take a break from their role. Volunteers also assist in staffing events designed to identify additional Carers in the county.

  • Impact

    Impact

Support for Carers will be delivered by Volunteers rather than staff for cases that are less complex.
Cases will no longer be open to Support staff for extended periods ie longer than 3 months. Spreadsheets of open and close dates will be used to monitor this

    Risk

    1. Reduced funding from local authority. Dealt with by seeking funding from elsewhere.

    Reporting

We are diligent in recording statistics for all cases and activities and reports will be produced to meet the demands of funders.

  • Background

    Location

The organisation covers the county of Wiltshire (as defined by the area served by Wiltshire Council). The Volunteer Coordinator role is required for the west of the area, which is presently without someone in this role. Core funding does not cover this role, and those fulfilling the role in other parts of the county are not funded for this locality.

    Beneficiaries

The 2001 Census said that there were some 40,000 Carers in Wiltshire, of which there are presently some 5,000+ supported by Carer Support Wiltshire. The newly merged organisation which is now aligned to the unitary authority is seeking ways to provide services more cost effectively. The governments initiative around volunteering is a fundamental part of this, which we wish to utilise.
