  • Need


    From health research to information technology, mathematical skills are the backbone of modern societies. Research shows that investment in university level education in Africa may well be the fastest route to technological catch-up and economic development. However few people have the opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies and even less remain in Africa once they’ve completed them. All of these factors have led to a critical scarcity of mathematical and scientific expertise.


    AIMS recruits students from all over Africa for a postgraduate program taught by outstanding international lecturers within a 24-hour learning environment. AIMS focuses on advanced, broadly applicable mathematical skills relevant to Africa’s development needs. Training in mathematical science is highly cost-effective: it requires no costly laboratories, yet develops strong independent thinking and problem-solving abilities, preparing students for a range of scientific and technical careers.

    What success will look like

    Graduates return to their home countries following completion of all post graduate studies using their mathematical skills to make an impact in their chosen sector.

  • Impact


    The project will reverse the trend of talented academics leaving Africa, increasing the numbers of skilled teaching and research staff in universities, and qualified mathematical scientists in government and industry. Success will be seeing 60% of graduates working in African Institutions within four years of graduation from an AIMS institute.


    Instability in hosts countries, and instability in host government funding could severely impact this project. Centres have therefore been located in the most stable countries in regions and strong relationships are being built with host governments to ensure continuity of funding.


    Reporting requirements will be negotiated with donors based on the scope of the relationship expected. All donors who give their email address will receive the Foundation's annual report.

  • Background


    AIMS's four centres currently accepting students are based in Cape Town, South Africa, M'bour in Senegal, Biriwa in Ghana and Limbe in Cameroon. Students are recruited from across Africa with over 41 countries currently represented. AIMS-Tanzania is due to open in October 2014.


    Primary beneficiaries will be mathematical scientists who receive the scholarships. Students come from across Africa, and returning to their institutions they impact upon research and teaching carried out in their departments, meaning that their students will also be beneficiaries.

    The founder of AIMS, Neil Turok, brings his vast network, including top level academics, politicians and business men together to support the centres.

    International Development Research Centre (IDRC, Canada)

    IDRC is the implementing agency for Canada's contribution, providing AIMS-NEI with technical assistance, linkages and world-wide support.

    Department For International Development (DFID)

    DFID is the agency through which the British Government has provided funding for AIMS-NEI, providing technical assistance and private sector linkages

    Commitment to cover half the operational costs in addition to providing suitable land for the construction of permanent facilities for the Institute
