Moped Loan Scheme
The Moped Loan Scheme offers young people the chance to access opportunities which may be restricted by the rurality of their location, shown as a real issue through research and our own young people consultations. We provide training equipment and bikes for these young people to combat disadvantage
Somerset Rural Youth Project
Many young people in rural areas find it hard to stay in education or to find and retain their first jobs due to a lack of transport. Transport is often not available to many or the costs are too great.
This scheme helps young people to bridge the gap between dependence to independence. The equipment and youth work support given by our moped loan scheme, transforms the lives of a number of young people who are entirely dependent upon poor public transport, to 80% having their own forms of transport on completion of the scheme.
To deliver the moped loan scheme to young people, enabling them to continue education or employment.
Activities» Advertise the Moped Loan Scheme through schools, colleges and wider communities.
» Support young people to independent transport solutions.
» Maintain and establish new links with further education centres.
Success will be shown by the numbers of young people on the scheme attending further education practices, with the moped as the mode of transport.
The moped Loan Scheme has already shown support of young people into education and further young people into jobs over the past 13 years.
By targetting those disadvantaged who would often otherwise be left without work or education, the Moped Loan Scheme also improves wider communities. Risks of individuals claiming job seekers allowances or following a path of offending are reduced, supported by reduced crime in rural communities since the start of this scheme.
The safety of young people is of highest importance. It is very hard to control the risk of using the roads but our training and ongoing youth work support empowers young people with all the safety knowledge to stay incident free. We also provide high visibility jackets and safety equipment for every young person.
All incidents will be reported and logged.

SRYP's Moped Loan Scheme is based through Somerset and across the boarder into neighbouring counties should there be a need. Somerset has one of the lowest rates of education attainment and employment, much due to the lack of transport in rural areas. The Moped Loan Scheme continues to fight against this, removing obstacles which stand in the way of many young people in Somerset.
The Moped Loan Scheme targets young people in rural Somerset who do not have the money or local transport system to achieve their potential.
The Moped Loan Scheme gives direct opportunities to individuals, as well improving the wider community with more young people in education and working, also supporting the local economy and decreasing the likelihood of offending.
The Moped Loan Scheme has been running for over 13 years and supported more than 500 people into education and work, who would not have otherwise had this opportunity. Years of networking has allowed a constant stream of young people to make the most of this scheme and increased efficiency has seen financial requirements per bike, drop to a level where investments really do get to the rider!
