Vietnamese Youth, Sustainable Futures

Vietnamese youth are passionate about having a sustainable future. Challenge to Change has worked with university youth groups in three cities of Vietnam, to develop 'Green Action Plans'. These include a wide range of activities, relating to climate change and the environment. They need support!

September 2011 - April 2013

  • Need

    Need

Vietnam is a rapidly developing country. Adults generally focus on economic growth. But youth are increasingly focusing there attention on sustainability issues. Youth are the main stakeholders of the future in Vietnam. University students are the future leaders of government, the private sector, and civil society. But they currently have little power, and no voice, in official decision-making. Therefore government decisions are dominated by middle-aged 'growth' thinking.

    Solution

    The project will:

    a. increase the capacity of Youth to pursue Sustainability
    b. raise the voice of Youth in current decision-making
    c. empower Youth to put ideas on Sustainability into practice
    d. link Vietnamese Youth with international sustainability initiatives.

By providing a series of lectures on Sustainability Literacy, and by advocating for youth participation in City Climate Change Action Planning, and by providing financial and technical support to Youth Green Action Plans.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To increase the capacity of Youth to pursue Sustainability

    Activities

» Organise a lecture tour for a Sustainability Lecturer from the UK, in four Vietnamese university cities, and carry out careful follow-up.

Success will be in the quality of content and implementation of the Green Action Plans. Also in longer term orientation of youth careers.

    Aim 2

To raise the Voice of Youth in current decision-making

    Activities

» Using its position as Training Coordinator for the Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network in Vietnam, CtC will ensure Youth participate more..

Success will be Youth representatives, both female and male, participating in 'City Climate Change Coordination Office' meetings.

    Aim 3

To empower Youth to put ideas on Sustainability into Practice

    Activities

» Provide financial and technical support to 'Green Action Plans' already elaborated by Youth in three cities: Da Nang, Quy Nhon, and Can Tho.

Success will be the number and quality of achievements of the 3 City Youth Green Action Plans (Da Nang, Quy Nhon, Can Tho).

    Aim 4

To link Vietnamese Youth with International Sustainability Initiatives

    Activities

» CtC will use its UK and international contacts to link Youth in the 3 Vietnamese cities with international Youth and Sustainability organisations.

Success will be Youth representatives continuing to link with, and exchange learnings and inspiration, from international sustainability sources and initiatives.

  • Impact

    Impact

Sustainability thinking, to the extent possible replacing 'growth' thinking, among emerging leaders of government, private sector, and civil society, in three Vietnamese cities.

Success will be demonstrated by creation and monitoring of the network of Youth from the three cities, involved in this project, and surveying their future values and behaviour.

    Risk

Some Youth groups in the three cities are formal, some are informal. We plan to work with both. Working with informal groups (for example, an alumni group, or an English-language-learning group), carries some risk because the group has no legal status. To minimise risk, CtC signs tri-lateral agreements, that is, between CtC, local government, and the informal group.

    Reporting

Quaterly, by e-mail. Reports will include great photos of all youth activities in the cities! So far as possible, CtC will enable the donor to interact with the Youth groups, by passing on messages of support, questions etc. Donors are also encouraged to visit Vietnam and participate (if possible!)

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Challenge to Change is already working in these three cities. We facilitated the development of the Youth Green Action Plans, during 2010, with the expectation they would be funded by Rockefeller Foundation, under the Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network (ACCCRN) in 2011. However, the activities in the Green Action Plans, did not meet the ACCCRN criteria. CtC is still working in the three cities, on other ACCCRN activities. We still want to support Youth, and they want our support.
