To improve the quality of life of terminally ill and recovering Jewish cancer patients enabling them to meet with an NHS Palliative Care consultant locally at Chai’s Hendon Centre rather than in an acute medical/hospice setting whilst their carers can access Chai general support services

  • Need


    To provide an alternative to a patient’s current palliative care current option in an acute medical/ hospice setting which can involve long waiting lists of up to 8 weeks for a first appointment with a consultant, parking aggravations/ costs, waiting times and limits placed by NHS on services and the postcode lottery around accessibility of NHS services and treatments, in addition to the negative connotations of being treated in such environments.


    It will improve the quality of life of the patients. Geographically more convenient to N/NW London/ Hertfordshire patients, waiting times to be seen by a Palliative Care Consultant will be shorter than the NHS with longer consultation times available. Chai provides free parking, saving the expense and aggravation of parking. Chai’s volunteer service will assist those without transport. Chai places no limits on services. Carers can access Chai’s services while the patient is attending the clinic.

    Aim 1

    To deliver Palliative Care outpatient treatment at Chai with Consultant appointments for


    » A Consultant will be available 1 days per week for booked in cancer patients to see Jewish terminally ill and recovering cancer patients
    » Will prescribe medications, infusions and blood tests and refer patients for follow therapies and counselling at Chai
    » Consult about issues affecting quality of life, eg disabilities and chronic pain resulting from the illness or treatment
    » Access medical and psychological rehabilitation and other services available at Chai

    Success will be demonstrated by increasing numbers using Chai's service over acute medical sites and the need to increase clinical hours of the service.

    Aim 2

    To improve access for cancer patients to attend a geographically convenient medical clinic


    » Provide unlimited services (following needs assessment) without charge or waiting lists
    » Provide free/ unlimited parking and free transport (by volunteers) from/ to home if necessary
    » Prescribe pain relieving/ symptom reducing medications or services regardless of postcode
    » Support patients living with long term uncertainty of their prognosis

    Success will be audited regularly by the Royal Free Hospital.

    Aim 3

    Create a service that through replication will benefit other faith groups and population cohorts


    » Enable patient's carers to access Chai's support services on site while cancer patient is attending the palliative care clinic
    » Have the service to be reported in medical journals and national/ medical press
    » Share the learning of the set up and operation of the clinic with other statutory and voluntary organisations

    Success will be...the recording of the model in medical journals and replicated elsewhere in the UK by other statutory/ voluntary cancer service providers

    Aim 4

    Meet the targets for the Government's National Agenda for Cancer Survivorship


    » By providing supportive services to increase quality of life of terminally ill and recovering cancer patients

    Success will be an increased quality of life of the patients using the service and will be measured using the accredited tool MYCAW to measure satisfaction with service outcomes

  • Impact


    This tri partnership between Chai, The Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust and Marie Curie Cancer Care meets all targets for the Government's National Agenda for Cancer Survivorship. It's the first of its kind in the UK and could change the future of cancer survivorship if promoted successfully via medical networks. Palliative care aims to provide quality of life for patients over longer time. this can be demonstrated by numbers accessing the clinic


    The risk of a funding shortfall can be dealt with by targeted fundraising. Chai maintain a funding reserve that can be utilised and replenished if necessary. In the event of clinical risk The Royal Free will deal with this eventuality. Service Level Agreements, protocols and patient pathways are in place between the 3 organisations to mitigate all defined risks


    Donors will receive 6 monthly updates on service usage and development. Reports can provide quantitative & qualitative data and anonymous case studies, but will be unable to disclose patient names due to clients’ confidentiality.

  • Background


    Based in Chai's flagship Hendon centre, North West London the service will primarily be accessible to cancer patients in the Boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Brent Islington and Hertfordshire. Chai benefits the full of economic spectrum within the Jewish community. It is able to cater specifically for their cultural and emotional requirements. Each year over 1700 Jews in the UK are diagnosed with cancer. The service will serve a population of 220,000 people in the Jewish community


    Currently Chai is supporting 750 Jewish cancer patients, all of whom would be eligible to benefit from this free palliative care Service. It will welcome Jewish cancer patients referred by The Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust and Marie Curie Cancer Care and those who live within a geographical reach of the centre, therefore removing postcode boundaries of cancer care accessibility. It is not means tested so is accessible to all socio-economic groups within the Jewish community

    Why Us?

    Chai has 21 years experience providing cancer services to patients/families. All Chai counsellors/ therapists are qualified in their field of expertise, specifically trained in cancer issues and operate within clearly defined clinical governance programmes. Dr Rachael Craig, consultant in Palliative Care has been jointly appointed by Chai and RFH to lead the service. Supervised by Dr Adrian Tookman. Chai is advised in clinical matters by a Medical Advisory Panel of eminent cancer specialists.
