  • Need

One in Four is the statistical ratio of adults who have experienced childhood abuse and the repercussions of this are well known. Early intervention is the most effective way of managing these difficulties. Being abused as a child sets a dynamic which is passed through generations by a sense of the world being unsafe and parents being emotional unavailable for their children. In the extremes this can lead to violence and anti social behaviour in young adults and even extreme pathology.

By providing counselling and psychotherapy for individuals who have experienced sexual and childhood abuse, support for their friends and families and support during and after the reporting of the abuse, should they wish to. We will also offer workshops and groups for specific areas of difficulty, such as intimacy and coping with loss. Offering specialist services is paramount towards breaking the cycle of abuse.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To provide specialist counselling and psychotherapy for individuals, couples, families and friends.

» Provide a safe and comfortable therapeutic environment
» Provide qualified and experienced counsellors and psychotherapists
» Advertising throughout Surrey for raising awareness and accessibility to the services of One in Four

    What success will look like

Success will be receiving referrals throughout Surrey. Seeing our posters displayed in health organisations and educational institutions in Surrey.

  • Impact

The long term changes will be felt in families and society for generations to come.
The measure of success will come from the clients themselves. They will be invited to highlighting how this has impacted on them, their role in their local community and society as a whole.

The main risk to this project is lack of funding for advertising and administration needs. This risk is being managed by keeping costs to a minimum where possible and fostering good working relationships with other Surrey based agencies to facilitate promotion through ‘word of mouth’.

Donors will receive bi-monthly e-mail reports detailing attendance numbers and ongoing requirements. Donors would also be invited to contact the Surrey co-ordinator directly at any time.

  • Background

Though Surrey has the reputation of privilege and wealth there are many pockets of real poverty and family/community breakdown within the county. Sexual Abuse happens to all members of society regardless of social status/standing or financial wealth. In recent years the Surrey area has been in the spot light with high profile cases such as Sarah Payne and Milly Dowler, both Surrey residents and living within 5 miles of Byfleet, One in four's Surrey base.

The whole of society will benefit from this project as it supports people back to a state of well being. This may be a long process but benefits are unending. The individuals, the families and the friends will benefit; local doctors and health workers and the police and social services, school staff on all levels.
