A Girl Can Change the World
28 million girls in Africa can't afford to go to school. A girl may marry at just 13 and has a one in 22 chance of dying in childbirth. One in six of her children will die before the age of five. Education can change everything. Camfed supports girls, empowers women and brings change to communities.
Charity information: CAMFED International
Poverty is the greatest barrier to girls in Africa receiving an education. With families living in poverty any spare funds tend to be used on male childrens' education as there are still more opportunities for men to receive jobs after school. Families often see marriage as the best solution for their girl children. When young women drop out of school to become wives and mothers, their hopes and dreams are snuffed out. WIthout role models in their communities young women have little to aspire to
Camfed offers a package of support to the most marginalized girls in rural Africa to allow them to go school to get the education they would otherwise be denied. Camfed has so far supported 1.6 million girls to go school and improved the learning environments of 4 million children. The Camfed alumnae network, CAMA, which is made up of Camfed graduates, offers mentorship to other young people and encourages them to become leaders of change. Whole communities are uplifted when girls are educated.
To send 1 million more girls to school by 2020
