Rural Medical and Dental Programme
We are sending pairs of trained dental nurses into very remote rural locations in Cambodia, to treat children who have never seen a dentist or doctor before. The nurses perform basic dental procedures as well as providing hygiene and medical training for the villagers.
March 2011 - December 2016
Charity information: The Cambodian Children's Charity
Children in rural areas have no access to medical or dental treatment.
By sending out trained dental nurses, they can achieve far more than a full mobile dental unit for a given time and cost. Patients requiring more complex treatment are noted and a follow-up visit by our full dental team will be scheduled or the child transported to one of our clinics in Phnom Penh.
To provide basic dental treatment to children in rural areas of Cambodia and reduce suffering.
Activities» Send fully equipped dental nurses to rural locations.
Success will be monitored by the (volunteer) management team in Phnom Penh who will review the detailed reports prepared by the nurses, of their visits.
To provide basic medical and hygiene training to rural communities.
Activities» Training to be provided by the visiting nurses
Success will be achieved by consulting village chiefs and elders during the visits by the full mobile units.
To identify and treat children requiring more complex medical or dental needs.
Activities» By identifying those children requiring treatment and scheduling a visit by one of our full mobile units, or transporting the child to Phnom Penh.
Success will be monitored by follow up work by the full mobile unit managers during their return visits to the villages.
Reduce the immense suffering endured by children in rural areas who have never had access to any dental or medical treatment. Reports are produced of the number and type of procedure performed at each visit and these will be periodically summarised and included on our news weblog: www.camkids.blogspot.com.
Recruiting and training the dental nurses. We have links with all of the major dental training facilities and have not encountered any problems, to date.
The programme is infinitely scaleable - as more funds are available, we can increase the number of teams, The greater the number of teams in the field, the more efficient the follow-up work by the full mobile units.
Summary reports will be produced from the raw data submitted by the nurses and periodic reports to donors will be posted on CamKids' News Weblog: www.camkids.blogspot.com. Detailed reports will be available upon request.

Rural areas in Cambodia. Initially within 3-4 hours of Phnom Penh, but planning to extend to whole country.
Children from extremely poor (<$1 per day income) communities in rural parts of Cambodia. Many families were decimated by the Khmer Rouge in the 1970's and have still not recovered. Very low average age in Cambodia, due the the killing of older people by the KR regime or death by disease, starvation. Very high proportion of children with little or no support from family members.
We have proven expertise in performing this type of work in Cambodia and mobilise a large team of young volunteer Cambodians, to leverage the maximum benefit from donated funds. The charity itself and its local partner have no overhead or admin costs and all of the trustees and medical staff provide their services free of charge. CamKids has absolutely no costs, as we obtain all of the goods and services we require from corporate or individual friends of the charity.
