Sensory Centre

Our proposal is to establish a sensory centre in North Wales used by charities and organisation supporting people with sensory loss to serve the community throughout North Wales.The centre would provide a wide range of facilities that the Charities and organisations using the centre could use.

    Need

    In North Wales sevices for the Deaf and hard of hearing community and people with sight loss is fragmented. We aim to establish a centre that will become a one stop shop for people with sensory loss to access these services. We also wish to raise awarness of the problems face by those with sensory loss in the community as a whole

    Solution

    By establishing a centre we aim to encourage other organisations and service providers to use the centre to deliver their services to those with sensory loss. We also wish to provide courses and events to encourage the community as a whole to use the centre thus raising awareness of the problems caused by sensory loss in the community as a whole

    Greater access to community support and health advice for our client group

    » By having other charities and community support services use the centre those with hearing loss will have easier access to these services

    Success will be...50000 visitors a year to the centre and 70% of those with sensory loss expressing improvement in health and community support

    More positive attitude in the communty towards our client group

    » By running events of interest to the community as a whole we aim to encourage them to use the centre and become more aware of hearing loss issues

    Greater deaf awareness amongs people and organisations

    Reduce the fealing of isolation felt by our client group

    » By encouraing those in our client group to use the centre they will interact with those with hearing loss and with the community as a whole
    » By creating a Hub in North Wales to deliver services for people with sensory loss we can work with other organisations to deliver a joined up service

    80% of people with sensory loss reporting a reduction in their feeling of isolation after 3 years


  • Impact

    Impact

    Improved health and greater support and a reduction in isolation for those with hearing loss. Our work will monitor these changes in the Deaf and hard of hearing community

    Risk

    Risk could be a lack of funding to maintain the centre. To combat this we aim to hire out conference facilities to the community as a whole and run a cafe/catering facilitity to generate funds for the centre

    Reporting

    We provide a quarterly newsleter plus an annual report and finacial statement

  • Background

    Location

    We aim to establish the centre North Wales. We are looking to establish it in Llandudno Juction due to its good public transport links and ease of access to people throughout North Wales

    Beneficiaries

    Theire are appriximatly 700000 people in North Wales. It is estimated that 16% of the population are deaf or hard of hearing. Thise percentage rises considerably for those aged over 65.Not only will those with hearing loss benefit from the centre but the community as a whole will benefit from a new community resource

    We are the only charity working to help those with hearing loss based in North Wales. We have been working in the community since 1994 and have gained considerable knowledge and expertise.
