Genetic testing

Certain genes have been linked to migraine, a condition linked to Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome, we plan to run a pilot screening to compare the incidence of the genes in the two populations. This might offer the first practical diagnostic tool. Average time to diagnosis is currently nearly 4 years.

  • Need

Time to diagnosis is nearly 4 years, no diagnostic tests are available. Identification of genes linked to CVS would be a major step forward in reducing suffering of children and adults with CVS and reduce the time taken to reach a diagnosis.

During diagnosis it is common to have no effective treatment. A diagnostic test would be a major factor in directly reducing suffering and enabling effective treatment, improving quality of life.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Investigate the incidence of migraine related genes in a CVS population

    » Screening volunteers

    What success will look like

Success will be...peer reviewed scientific publication

    Aim 2

Identify any genetic sub populations within the CVS group

» Genetic screening, some CVS sufferers have migraine like symptoms, some do not. We need to help identify sub populations to target effective therapy.

    What success will look like

Success will be...peer reviewed scientific publication

  • Impact

A potential diagnostic test to identify CVS sufferers, and then to target appropriate therapy, thus reducing the suffering as currently therapy is based on trial and error and often many months of vomiting episodes are experienced before any benefit can be found. If successful identification of genes linked to CSV would enable new drug development.

Obtaining volunteers for such test can be difficult, during a survey of members we asked if we can contact them to take part in future research we had an 80% + positive response.

Publication on the charity website, in the scientific press, and directly if possible.
