Online Hospice Community
Access to a support network and having someone to share your troubles with is one of the much needed services provided by the hospice. This project allows us to extend our support network of nurses, fellow patients, carers and families available to an online community - accessible anytime, anywhere.

We are restricted by the premises and staff to the number of patients we can have to visit as outpatients and see regularly, but many of them already use email to contact us with concerns or queries or just a chat when they need it. Many of these discussions/answers are relevent to all so if we could facilitate sharing of troubles and create a discussion forum it would make a big difference - as they say "a problem shared is a problem solved".
By allowing logged in members - whether they be nurses, patients, their carers or immediate family - to discuss openly any challenges they are facing, and how they are dealing with them. It will enable them to feel part of a community and that they are not alone in having to deal with the challenges that terminal illness brings not just to the patient but to those around them. There will also be able to communicate privately with nurses if they so wish.
Build online community forum website for the hospice
Activities» Hold user groups to design an appropriate forum for use.
» Create and build a website that can host the forum - with both public and private options
» Hold training sessions for patient,s staff and carers - using a laptop in the hospice for guidance and training as needed.
» Run for a pilot phase of 6 months then review results and consider modifying and/or extending the project as appropriate
Success will be having over 200 members of the online community sharing their experience and at least 20 reports of positive feedback in the first 6 months.
The project will reduce to a minimum the time that people worry alone (often needlessly!). It will provide an opportunity to discuss, share and support those struggling to come to terms with the same issues.
We will demonstrate the success of the project by monitoring useage of the site. We will also obtain direct feedback from the patients and their families on the benefits of the site.
There is a risk that no-one signs up because it is new and they don't trust it or know how to use it. We will deal with these risks by getting patient input throught the design and by undertaking online training and using a reputable supplier for the development to ensure security.
Donors will receive a monthly report, which will detail progress of the project as it is being built, and useage statistics once it is up and running.

The hospice is located in High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, and our patients come from anywhere is the South Bucks area (inc. Beaconsfield, Marlow, Amersham, The Chalfonts and Princes Risborough)
Anyone in South Bucks who is suffering from a life-limiting illness as well as their carers and family. The forum will hopefully be opened up to people we are unable to support directly as patients due to the limits of our capacity.
The hospice has 17 years experience of hospice care and working with patients both in daycare and as outpatients. We have a wealth of specialist palliative care expertise that will be made more accessible via this project. Our services for both patients and their families have extended over the years and we have both the knowledge and the people to make this project a success.
