Foundation's Domestic Abuse Children's Service
Children are often victims or witnesses of domestic abuse suffering emotional, psychological and physical problems that without intervention can continue into adulthood. Our project will offer support to children and young people assisting them towards a healthy adulthood and greater resilience.
September 2011 - September 2014
More than 25% of young people report that physical violence occurred in the home during their childhood and for 5% this was frequent. In North Yorkshire children were present for 17% of domestic abuse incidents. As a result children often experience behavioural, emotional and physical problems. In some instances young people become perpetrators themselves. Intervention will help children and young people to overcome behavioural, emotional and physical problems.
Our project will provide a specialist service delivered by a professional Play Therapist. Children/young people who have been victims or have witnessed domestic abuse will be referred by partners and our existing Domestic Abuse Service based in Scarborough. Working on a one-to-one basis or in groups the project will offer non-verbal counselling, play coaching and art therapy - music, dance, visual arts, dance, movement, film and puppetry. This will build resilience, emotional and mental health.
To promote resilience, emotional, psychological and physical well being in children and young people
Activities» Provide a specialist play therapy service using an evidence-based approach
» Employ a Play Therapist to deliver the service in an Activities Centre and from schools across the district
» Promote referrals from partner organisations and the Scarborough Domestic Abuse Service
» Promote and market the Play Therapy Service to partner organisations and other stakeholders
Success will be.measured via psychometric tests, behavioural records and formal and informal feedback from parents, children/young people, and schools.
In the long term it will help project beneficiaries to have a healthy adulthood enabling them to cope better, manage their emotions and deal with problems. We will measure their emotional and mental health and monitor improvements in behaviour during and after intervention has taken place. Intervention will help to prevent children becoming perpetrators themselves and we will monitor incidents of domestic abuse across the district as well as providing domestic abuse sessions at local schools.
Loss of the Domestic Abuse Service in Scarbough is the main risk that would affect this project. We will seek to ensure that this service continues by monitoring service outcomes, working closely with commissioners and promoting the DAS across the district.
The Play Therapist will compile quarterly reports detailing the number of children and young people who have benefited from the project and the positive outcomes that they have achieved. We will also provide case studies to provide individual examples of how the project has achieved and its impacts.
