Project information

WLAC Children and Youth Programme

Specialist talking therapies for vulnerable children have enormous benefits for their long term mental and physical wellbeing. We work with families who are in poverty and socially isolated. We collaborate with local schools, the Local Authorities and other agencies to support families.

This is a core service that we want to provide to the community on an ongoing basis

  • Need

    Need

    Serious mental health issues affect 1/10th of UK children but only 1/4 are receiving any kind of specialist help. LBHF estimates that 2400 children in their borough alone need such support but currently do not receive a service. Many continue to be disturbed and are at risk of becoming involved with drugs, crime or becoming young teenage parents. There is a recognised need for more & better therapeutic support that treats the whole family, at an early stage of childrens’ lives.

    Solution

    We will provide 1:1 specialist therapy and counselling for children and their parents. We will also offer 3 group services in local schools for children aged 4-11, who have been identified by the school (Mighty Me, Cool Moves & Shining Stars). Children and parents are helped to identify best hopes and goals for the future and are involved in shaping their own therapy. "WLAC provides crucial and transformative services for the school and our families" - local school governor.

  • Impact

    Impact

    This addresses a local shortfall in early support services for vulnerable children, enabling families to discover their strengths and, with professional support, work towards individual life enhancing goals.
    Success is demonstrated by:
    1. empowering vulnerable children and parents to engage with the services that enable them to turn their lives around;
    2. families being supported to improve relationships
    3. children being empowered to take advantage of opportunities and reach their potential

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

    We have been here, supporting our local communities, for 100 years. We understand local needs, and families and agencies know and trust our work. We have collaborated with other organisations and our local authorities for many years. Families like that we are small, independent and local and not part of any larger group that might carry a stigmatising label. Our service is client-led - clients say what they would like from us and how they would like it - and we work with the WHOLE family.
