WLAC Children and Youth Programme

Specialist talking therapies for vulnerable children can have enormous benefits for their long term mental and physical wellbeing. We work with families who are in poverty and socially isolated, with significant problems. We collaborate with local schools, charities and boroughs to support families.

This is a core service that we want to provide to the community on an ongoing basis

  • Need

    Serious mental health issues affect 1/10th of UK children but only 1/4 are receiving any kind of specialist help. Our borough of H&F estimates that 2400 children who need such support are currently not receiving a service. Many continue to be disturbed, and are more likely to become involved with drugs, crime or become teenage parents. There is a recognised need for more & better therapeutic support that treats the whole family, at an early stage of childrens’ lives. WLAC steps in here.

    We will provide 1-to-1 specialist therapy and counselling for children and their parents in our office. We will also offer 4 individual or group services in local schools for children aged 2-12, who have been identified by school staff and social services (Mighty Me, Cool Moves, Paws B & Our Place). Children and parents are helped to identify best hopes and goals for the future and are involved in shaping their own therapy.

  • Impact

    This addresses a local shortfall in early support services for vulnerable and needy children, enabling families to discover their strengths and, with professional support, work towards individual life enhancing goals.
    Success is: 1. Being successful in getting vulnerable children and parents to engage with the service that enables them to turn their lives around;
    2. Up to 400 families each year enabled to work towards individual life enhancing goals, often under very challenging circumstances.

    We have policies, procedures and guidelines in place regarding evey aspect of our work, covering clients, staff, volunteers, trustees and our finances.

    There is a client and school waiting list for those wishing to work with us. We have 9 professional fully qualified and experienced staff who are able to cover for each other, if required.

    Donors receive e-reports detailing the progress of our children's school-based services and individual therapy, including case studies, times and locations of the service and numbers. Difficulties and successes will be presented, aswell as any necessary changes that have been made to project plans.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

    We have been here, supporting our local communities, for 99 years. We understand local needs, and families and agencies know and trust our work. We have collaborated with other organisations and our local authorities for many years. Families like that we are small, independent & local and not part of any larger group that might carry a stigmatising label. Also, our service is client-led - they say what they want from us and how they want it - and we work with the WHOLE family.
