There are nearly one million unemployed young people in the UK. Unemployment at a young age can have a significant impact on confidence and future career prospects. Young Million aims to offer 18-25 year olds the leadership development they would receive if they were in employment.
April 2011 - May 2012
Young people often have their first experiences of leadership and gain confidence in their first jobs. Nearly one million people between 16-24 are unemployed and therefore missing out on the experience and skills they need to move into successful careers in the future. It's a massive untapped pool of talent, creativity and innovation we need to create change and they're losing confidence in their abilities and the system very quickly.
Common Purpose has been running leadership courses in the UK for 21 years. Our expertise and experience has shown that when people are inspired and connected, they’re better employees and leaders. We can't solve the problem by getting young people into jobs. What we can do is support the Young Million by building their confidence, leadership skills and networks so when they find that job, they’re a step ahead. And providing a resource for opportunities in their local area.
To run 20 courses for 1000 young people throughout the UK by May 2012
Activities» Seek donations of time, venues and funds to run courses in local areas for 50 young people each with local leader participation.
Success will be reaching and exceeding our mark of 20 courses for 1000 young people and having 5%+ of those young people find new opportunities following the course.
Signpost opportunities for young people, including local programmes, support, training or jobs.
Activities» Seeking information about support resources in local areas through our local teams and donor suggestions.
Success will be an extensive resource library with at least 2 opportunities in each region and significant web traffic.
Research on the impact of our leadership courses shows that people feel more capable as leaders, more confident in their work environments and better able to engage with different people. We hope to kick start a variety of charitable and social enterprise support for unemployed people and support 5% or more of the participants on our course into employment via the new local connections they make during the course. We'll demonstrate success by sharing participant stories and course assessments.
Given the overwhelming response so far for time and venue donations, there is a risk we won't be able to match the funding with the in-kind donations so far to run as many courses as we'd like. However we're keen to find a number of ways to make as many courses in as many locations possible. We have many supporters in locations throughout the UK who have been ambassadors for the course since it started.
Donors have subscribed to received email communications so they'll receive regular updates about the progress of the campaign, and later, stories from participants supported in their local area. Most of the donors have offered their time so they'll also get a first-hand experience of the course.

Young people between the ages of 18-25 who are unemployed but actively seeking work. They can be anywhere in the UK and can opt to attend a course in another location if one is unavailable where they live.
We have 21 years experience running leadership courses that bring together leaders from all sectors and backgrounds and a unique experiential curriculum that doesn't just explore what leadership is, but helps people learn to lead for real. The courses provide people with the inspiration, knowledge and connections to help make them successful wherever they lead.

An early period of unemployment has a scarring effect that can last for the rest of the worker’s life.
