Fight poverty in the slums of Mumbai, India

Mumbai is home to a large slum population estimated between 7-10 million people with no/little access to financial services.

Green Shoots Foundation and its local partners will work with the urban poor in Mumbai slums, focusing primarily on women and helping them to improve their livelihoods.

  • Need


    Currently only a small number of microfinance institutions operate in the slums of Mumbai. Their reach remains very limited, with an estimated 50,000 clients on a total slum population of 7-10 million.

    Slum inhabitants are true entrepreneurs but they lack access to the financial services that will help them launch their activities.


    Green Shoots Foundation is partnering up with other microfinance institutions and Non-Governmental Organisations/charities to set up education loan microfinance programmes in the slums of Mumbai. These operations aim to help slums households to enroll their daughter back to school.

    Our objective is to provide fair and efficient financial products that will help the poor provide their daughters with a quality education.

    Aim 1

    Establish education loan programmes that will grant access to education to 1,000 girls by year 3.


    » Raise awareness in the UK for microfinance and for the slum population in Mumbai.
    » Partner up with reliable and trustworthy microfinance operations in the slums.
    » Develop monitoring & evaluation and research programmes to ensure that our operations have the right impact.

    Success will be helping 200 girls in the first year, 300 girls in the second year and 500 girls in the third year.

  • Impact


    Higher level of education for the girls. Increased earnings potential. Economic and financial sustainability for the poor and improved livelihoods for the households.


    Organised crime and fraud are a risk for our operations and it also explains why so little has been done until now.

    We plan to address it by partnering up with a local microfinance institution with impeccable track-record and demonstrated capacity to reduce such risks.


    In addition to the annual report published with the Charity Commission, we report to donors via i) our quarterly newsletter, ii) regular updates and news on our website and iii) daily posts on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

    Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is the capital of the state of Maharashtra and home to approximately 12.5 million people.

    Its slum population is estimated between 7-10 million people.

    Our current operational areas include Chembur and Sion Koliwada in central Mumbai, Santacruz in Western Mumbai and Thane in North suburbs.


    Our operations will be targeted at the poor and ultra-poor and primarily at women and at the young.

    Based on the industry standard of 5 family member per household, we would expect to reach 5,000 people by year 3.
