The Big Welfare
Easington Social Welfare Centre built in 1935 now needs a major refurbishment to redevelop this community facility into a modern community resource that can serve the needs of its community.

The building was originally built with two entrances, no ladies toilets on the ground floor and no lift access to the upper level.
Built in the 1930s it is also in need of a major facelift to transform it into the modern era.
Create a new single entrance into the building, improved/new toilet facilities for male, female and disabled people and create additional usewr space for our community groups to use.

What success will look like
Success will be having a community centre that is accessible by all and usable by all.
Creating a new frontage to the building giving pbetter appearance on the high street. Creating a building that can be accessed and used by all and improving the range of events and activities taking place in the building to benefit our community.
Lack of funding means no project.
the redevelopment will be overseen by an Architect who has done similar works to other community centres. Reports of spend on the building project will be forthcoming.

Easington Colliery a former mining community in East Durham, North of England.
Local population of 7,000. A former mining industrial area with high levels of unemployment and suffering from deprivation.
It is the owner of this 1930s period building which houses one of the most significant dance halls ever built in the North East Coalfields for mine workers.
