Swimming for Safety
Swimming for Safety is a drowning prevention programme. In Vietnam, thousands of children drown annually. Our programme builds the capacity of local institutions by training swimming teachers, providing advice and giving support to help limit the human cost of extreme weather conditions.
May 2011 - October 2011
Charity information: Hue Help
In Hue city and throughout the province flooding is extremely common, yet it is common for both adults and children to be unable to swim. In 2006/7, over 2,000 children drowned in Vietnam. These preventable deaths are due to flooding, exposure to open water and a lack of awareness and swimming ability.
Our programme builds the capacity of local organisations (Thua Thien Hue Red Cross), and local schools to be able to implement drowning prevention schemes. We partner with the Swimming Teachers' Association in the UK to train high quality swimming teachers, who tehn teach swimming, basic first aid, water awareness and rescue skills to children - helping limit the human cost of extreme weather conditions.
Build the capacity of local institutions to prevent child drowning in central Vietnam
Activities» Train up swimming teachers in local schools and in local organisations, empowering them to help their communities.
» Assist the swimming teachers to run swimming classes, by providing equipment, knowledge and support.
What success will look like
Success will be measured by the successful training of swimming teachers, who can then successfully implement swimming training lessons for children.
In the long term, the Swimming for Safety programme will expand. Our aim is to provide qualified and experienced swimming teachers in the entire school system in Thua Thien Hue province - the objective is to reduce the number of children who drown. This will be a long term objective, but one that will be measurable through drowning statistics.
Adverse weather conditions -- We have organised this in the summer to minimise disruption from the weather.
Inury to children -- All locations have been checked by qualified assessors, and all staff working will receive qualifications that conform to international standards.
Donors can sign up to our monthly newsletter, which provides updates on a regular basis. We will also send direct updates on this programme to donors via email and inform them of developments. Our website will also contain up to date information, and we can be followed on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

This programme will operate initially in Phu Loc, which is a district belonging to Thua Thien Hue province in central Vietnam. This area is prone to severe annual flooding, and is also home to South East Asia's largest lagoon. It will take place with ten schools, at ten open water locations.
The people who will benefit are:
- Local schools and school teachers (increased capacity to educate)
- Children in the school systems (water awareness, safety, health)
- Local community (less children drown annually)
- Local organisations (Thua Thien Hue Red Cross has increased capacity to deliver drowning prevention initiatives)
Hue Help has been operating in Thua Thien Hue for five years, and running drowning prevention in Hue city for four years. We have a great link with local organisations, schools and authorities, as well as a team of experienced and competent staff. As a UK organisation, we can act as a connector - facilitating the transfer of technical knowledge from the UK to Vietnam.
