SOS Africa School Bus Appeal
With the ever increasing number of children being supported by SOS Africa, and the unreliable and potentially dangerous taxi services, we want to be able to provide a safe and cost effective means of getting the children we support to school. So we wish to purchase a minibus to provide this service.
Until the required funds are raised.
Charity information: SOS Africa
One of the biggest challenges we face is transporting our children to and from school in a safe and cost effective way. This is hindered by the state of public transport and rising increases in fuel prices. To date, SOS Africa has relied upon increasingly unpredictable and hazardous public taxi services and our own volunteers, to take its children to and from school. However, as the numbers of children supported by the charity increases, we need to find a more suitable solution to this problem.
The purchase of this minibus will allow our volunteers to pick up the children we support, and take them to and from school. They will then be able to rely on getting to school on time and returning home to undertake their chores in the home. We will be able to provide this service in a financially viable and sustainable way, as well as protecting the children from the possible dangers of using public transport services.
Raise £15,000 to purchase a minibus
Activities» We are appealing to individuals, groups and organisations who might be interested in providing financial assistance using media and social networking.
What success will look like
Success will be...Raising the required £15,000 to enable us to purchase the SOS Africa School Bus.
This project will:
1. Allow us to establish a regular safe and reliable routine for transporting our children to and from school.
2. Save the charity money on increasing transportation costs – this money can then be reinvested into our education programme allowing us to send more children to school.
3. There will no longer be a limit to the number of children which can be supported by our programme – transportation issues have always stood in the way of the long-term growth of our programme.
The main concern is if we don’t raise the capital to provide a school bus for the children. We hope it will only be a matter of time before this capital is raised. Inevitably, the longer it takes to raise the money, the longer we have to deal with increasingly unpredictable and hazardous transportation
Contingency plans for other issues, such as the long-term maintenance of the bus have already been developed. In addition, the charity’s volunteers are already qualified to drive school minibuses
Updates on the progress of the project will be posted and regularly updated on the SOS Africa website (www.sosafrica.com).

This project will be carried out in Lonely Park Township, Mafikeng, South Africa. This is the charity’s main area of operation. Lonely Park Township is a vast community of dwellings which suffer from economic underdevelopment and deprivation. There are no decent schools based within the township, which is why SOS Africa needs to purchase the school bus to transport its children to the better schools based within Mafikeng town centre.
The charity currently supports 12 children from the Lonely Park Township. However, after the purchasing of the school bus, this number is likely to significantly increase over the next few years.
SOS Africa is the only major charity operating in the area. The charity’s South African co-founder and volunteers are locally based and able to successfully co-ordinate and operate projects within the Lonely Township.
