DACT Community Minibus Purchase

Suitable transport in rural areas is the KEY issue for many disadvantaged people. Our fully accessible coachbuilt minibuses provide essential door-to-door transport which is a life-line to shopping, social inclusion and services. We have a need to replace one of old minibuses to maintain standards

April 2011 - March 2012

  • Need

    Need

The lack of transport in rural areas is increasing as public bus services are reduced drastically and in many cases cut out altogether. People are being increasingly isolated and excluded from social inclusion and no access to services and amenities. Those with any type of mobility problem are worst at risk even if there is a bus stop within so-called 'walking distance' . We aim to continue to address these problems and expand further to combat the increasing reduction in public services.

    Solution

Our Coachbuilt fully accessible minibus will provide door-to-door transport solutions, building on successful pilot projects we have run to establish Village Travel Clubs. This gives local solutions to local problems. We promote the service as - 'the day you want it, the time you want it, and to where you it to go'. This is supported by a large force of volunteer minibus drivers trained to the National MiDAS standard; they will even carry heavy shopping to the door for those in need.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Raise the capital required to purchase the Minibus

    Activities

    » Apply to Grant-making Trusts
» Run Fund-raising events and/or encourage our 195 affiliated community groups to raise funds towards this project.

Success will be raising the £63,500 required to place an official order for the vehicle.

    Aim 2

Establish the best Coachbuilt Minibus Supplier to meet our specification requirements.

    Activities

» Assess the current Supplier to ascertain if they are meeting our current specification needs.
    » Compare alternative Suppliers.
» Establish and confirm the build-time required and the date for delivery of the vehicle.
» Place an Official Order for the vehicle.

Success will be identifying the Coachbuilder who most closely matches our specification and delivery requirements.

    Aim 3

Continue to develop Travel Clubs in Villages not currently served with Transport.

    Activities

» Publicity and advice through leaflets, meetings with Community Groups, and liaison with Parish Council's.

Success will be the establishment of 10 new Travel Clubs/Groups providing transport solutions not previously available.

    Aim 4

Increase the number of volunteer Minibus Drivers, and train them to the National MiDAS standard.

    Activities

» Publicity and advice through leaflets, meetings with Community Groups, and liaison with Parish Council's

Success will be 10 additional Volunteer Minibus drivers.

  • Impact

    Impact

Our project will provide sustainable solutions to the transport needs of those in rural areas. A quality vehicle which should have a life-span of at least 7 years, committed volunteer drivers, and a dedicated Office staff will ensure a reversal of the current decline in transport.

The success will be demonstrated by the establishment of new community groups, the increase in passenger usage, and the recruitment of additional volunteers.

    Risk

The risk of lack of funding could postpone the decision to place an Official Order beyond the target for a March 2012 delivery.
We have/will communicate with donors to advise of any change to the proposed delivery date and ensure they are willing to carry donations forward to a new target date for purchase.

    Reporting

Donors will receive a quarterly emailed report detailing the amount of funds raised to date, and confirming/amending any project dates.

  • Background

    Location

DACT covers the whole of the Daventry District Area covering a total of 267 square miles. This huge rural area is made up of 74 parishes and 78 villages much of it without any public transport provision. We are uniquely placed in the Market Town of Daventry to serve the transport needs of the area.

    Beneficiaries

We estimate that 5,000 passenger journeys per year will be accomplished, reducing the isolation and disadvantage that many suffer in the rural areas. In addition, we can supply much-needed transport to schoolchildren who require transport to residential, educational, field trips, and vocational training. 70% of our clients are elderly, disabled or have mobility problems and our services are a life-line to them.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We have built up a very strong reputation over an 18-year period and are the only Community Transport Organisation in Daventry district. We have won many local business awards and a Regional Award for outstanding service and voluntary endeavour. We have 174 volunteers working for our organisation and last year they carried out in excess of 45,000 hours of service to carry this organisations services. Our customers often state, "we don't know how we could manage without DACT".
