Charity information: Ethiopian Schools for the Poor - English Alive Academy
Education is the future. Sponsorship of poor children will enable them the possibility of a real future free from poverty.
All the pupils targeted by the project will come from the town of Nazret as well as surrounding villages. Located one hundred kilometres east of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, Nazret is an area of high deprivation. With no provision for a subsidised or free high quality education, this project of sponsorships offers the only hope for poor young children.
If pupils do not receive sponsorship then there are two alternatives :
a/. for the lucky few, they will attend the local government school in which there are classes of over 80 and teaching is through rote learning.
b/. for many, education will be too much of a luxury and thus regardless of age , children will not attend school and simply go to work in the fields or tending cows. There is no compulsory education in Ethiopia.
Aim: Achieve sponsorship for 200 poor children and 14 teachers by 1st August 2015
Activities» Appealing for donations
» Presentations at Rotary clubs ( worldwide )
» Sponsored events including parachute jumping
What success will look like
Success will be...a guaranteed 200 child sponsorships and 14 teacher sponsorships, with the minimal of one month’s sponsorship funds being placed in the bank.
The project will make a huge difference in the lives of poor children. It will enable them a unique opportunity to receive a high quality education, thereby enabling them the prospect of a decent future.
Through the sponsorship of teachers, this means that the standard of education will be elevated, ultimately having a positive benefit for all pupils attending the school. Teachers will undergo comprehensive training and workshops , both in the fields of education as well as English.
The risk is that it may be difficult to sponsorships in future years for the pupils. We have dealt with this risk through dealing primarily with 50 students and offering sponsorship for a period of four years.
Once you sponsor a child, you will receive a photo and background information about their situation. We will send you regular updates as to their progress and you are free to make contact with your sponsored child at any time. This is the same for the teacher sponsorships.

Nazareth is situated approximately one hundred kilometres east of the capital Addis Ababa. The town is rural with almost all of its participants surviving on below two dollars a day. The kindergarten school was founded in 2004 due to the demand of the local community for a decent education for all children, regardless of background. An additional building was taken on in 2008 and again in 2013 in order to accommodate the ever swelling number of pupils.
We focus our resources most on those who are at greatest risk of deprivation. In a country where 77.8 % of the population live on below $ 2 a day, the need for a high quality subsidized education which enables all pupils to reach their own potential, regardless of ability is enormous. All of our pupil’s families live on below $2 a day, with 75 % surviving on one meal a day.
Before English Alive Academy opened, the children we support would either go to one of the local Government schools, or, they would not be able to attend school at all.
The advantages of English Alive Academy are numerous.
Smaller class sizes: Around 25 students per class rather than over 100 students in a typical class in a government school in Ethiopia.
Sponsored children attend the school completely free: There is no provision in other schools for scholarships of any kind.
