  • Need


    We are developing a project with 4 local schools, one of which is for children with special needs. The schools are in rural settings and the project is a mix of exploring the local area, expression through environmental art and discovery through outdoor activities such as caving. In order to give these children an equal experience and to provide activities suitable for their level of need and understanding, we need to provide additional support and expertise.


    Our Bursary fund pays for additional instructors to work with special needs groups and the money raised for this project is specifically for that purpose. Young people, especially those with special needs flourish when given the opportunity to use the outdoors as their classroom. By providing additional instructors, who have a wealth of expertise and experience of working with children with special needs in the outdoors we will be able to offer activities that are educational, exciting and fun.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    To develop a partnership with a local school for young people with special needs.


    » Meet with staff to explore ideas and look at the needs and abilities of the children.
    » Run training days for teaching staff to experience the activities and to look at how these will need adapting for the needs of individual children.
    » Involve teaching staff in planning the programme of activities.
    » Provide ongoing continuing professional development for all staff involved in this project.

    Success will be...That we work on a regular basis with the school.

    Aim 2

    Provide a long-term project, working with up to 20 children each year over the next three years.


    » This special school has committed the same level of spending and commitment to this project as the other 4 mainstream schools involved.
    » Each year robust evaluation will ensure the project aims are being met.
    » The evaluation will help develop a programme that specifically meets the needs of the children.
    » The cost has been identified from the start so schools are able to set aside funding from the start.

    Success will be...That the project continues for the three years, is successful and maybe continues beyond the three years.

    Aim 3

    To give young people with special needs a really exciting, fun experience.


    » The programme is adaptable to suit the needs of the children.
    » Hands on environmental and art activities will be creative showing that there a lots of ways to enjoy the outdoors.
    » Activities such as bushcraft will stimulate imaginations and provide magical experiences.
    » Adventurous activities such as caving are a powerful tool in encouraging young people to work together in a different environment.

    Success will be...By reviewing activities with children and staff, carrying out evaluation and by the smiles on their faces!

  • Impact


    The project will give school staff the skills and confidence to move learning out of the classroom. This is a creative team of staff but most of their activities are in the comfort of school grounds. It will also show parents that their child can do things they had never dreamed and they will also be encouraged to engage in new activities with their children. Our activity sessions are always fun, with everyone taking part young people come away feeling proud of themselves and their achievements.


    There is a risk that if we do not obtain enough funding to pay for additional staff we will need to scale down the level of activities, either to doing them on school grounds or by choosing less exciting options. This project will go ahead. The school is 100% committed, as are we.


    This project will appear in our annual reports, we produce 3 newsletters that go to everyone on our database and the children will compile each year a diary of what they have been up to, copies of which will go to donors.

  • Background


    Lindley Educational Trust’s outdoor centre in Castleton is set in the beautiful Peak District National Park. This project is for local schools and although this is an area of outstanding beauty many young people have little opportunity to access the countryside. Spending most of their time viewing the countryside from the car window they do not see it as a place for them. The children come from rural communities, often very inward looking and have little chance to just get out and explore.


    In this area the population is fairly spread out. With some children coming from farming communities and others from rural villages transport and lack of local amenities are often key barriers for families. For some disabled children, once they get home from school in the evening they are almost housebound till the next day.

    Why Us?

    This is a project for local schools to access. The schools involved are small and cannot afford to take part in this type of activity with another provider where they would need to stay residentially. We are local to the schools and the activities can be accessed on a day basis.
