  • Need

    Need

With only 30 hospitals within the UK admitting youth cancer patients, they are hospitalised far from home, family & friends for long periods of time whilst undergoing harsh & invasive treatments for their cancer. The words loneliness and isolation are heard too often from these young people. Chat-World will address these feelings and provide a secure communication network for these young people to gain peer support and share their concerns and fears with others.

    Solution

Chat-World is a secure online communication network built within a 3D virtual world, an island of escape for young cancer patient a place to find peer support, develop, and empower other young cancer patients. Chat-World allows patients to create a 3D 'Avatar' of themselves – similar to their own appearance or a fantasy from their imagination. Once in Chat-World, they can explore a variety of areas, play games and most importantly be able to cope with the uncertainties of living with cancer.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To create a secure virtual island, consisting for 6 different interactive areas of support.

    Activities

» Allow a focus group of youth cancer patients, from different hospitals to trial Chat-World, to feedback on their wants and needs from the island.

Success is the positive feedback we receive and will provide vital information regarding visits and usage from the young cancer patients during the trial phase.

    Aim 2

To launch Chat-World across the UK to the 30 hospitals admitting young cancer patients aged 13-24.

    Activities

» To trial Chat-World to three hospitals for 3 months, to ensure the island is proving a vital resource, prior to a national launch of Chat-World.

Success will be receiving 150 new users by the end of the 6th month after the national launch.

  • Impact

    Impact

The three core objectives are;- to reduce isolation and loneliness in young cancer patients, to provide a safe place where they can communicate and support each other and provide a form of escapism back into normality.

The successes will be evident by the numbers of visitors using and returning to the island. A moderator will be in place to ensure the security of the island and ensure Chat-World is a fresh and vibrant support mechanism for young cancer patients.

    Risk

One risk that we have come across so far is the Internet access within the hospitals. The program needed to access Chat-World is blocked in hospitals. After speaking with IT departments within some hospitals, they are happy to lift this block.
The hosting of this virtual world is done by an outside company, so some of the reliability does fall on them. We have made sure that we have picked the best possible company for this, Linden Labs, which are the world leaders in virtual worlds.

    Reporting

Funders of this project will receive a quarterly report on the progress of Chat-World detailing the number of visitors and actions as well as ongoing and forthcoming virtual world events. The report will provide feedback from the patients and hospitals.

  • Background

    Location

Chat-world is a virtual world that will be managed/controlled from the offices of the Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust based in Huddersfield West Yorkshire and yet Chat-World is a communication network within a virtual world so that young cancer patients can visit from anywhere, such as a hospital bed or if they are well from home - Chat-World is everywhere.

    Beneficiaries

Six today, 6 yesterday and 6 young people tomorrow will be told they have cancer and their lives will change forever.
From the current projects we organise, there are approximately 400 young young people in hospital with cancer each day. It is these young people who will benefit from Chat-World, as well as once they return home, they can still benefit from Chat-World to help them break down the walls of loneliness and isolation to give them an island of escape from their cancer.
