  • Need

Shallal inclusive dance theatre company have the opportunity to do two high profile performances this summer and need funds to support our rehearsals and to run our established community groups.
We are the only inclusive dance theatre company / arts organisation in Cornwall. There are very few other opportunities for people with additional needs/disabilities to dance or perform. The main company has run for over 20 years and we do not want to close.

The company members will be able to finish rehearsals and perform their show at two prestigious venues, at the Performance Centre,University College Falmouth, and the Exchange Gallery, Penzance, and extracts from the show at Truro Theatre.
The inclusive community groups will continue, many of the participants require support and have multiple needs, they need and value the opportunities these groups provide.
It will give Shallal more time to try to attract core funding

Success will be...All the participants at the community groups being able to continue their attendance, and can progress to main company. These groups involve over 70 people a week.

  • Impact

Shallal can have a profound effect on audiences, performers and participants, we want to continue, to invite people to see the work, and fight to have core funding. We want to continue to support emerging and developing artists especially those with learning disabilities’s, physical challenges, mental health issues, and autism, to help them to progress as far as possible and provide a platform for their talent.
We collect feedback from the public and participants, which inofrms our work.

Very rarely performers aren’t available for health/social/emotional reasons, we then adapt the work so it can still continue. We develop a close supportive relationship with the performers and their home life wherever possible.
If funding isn’t available we risk loosing our experienced facilitators, we are constantly seeking funding to avoid this. We have two trainee facilitators at present, in case the main facilitators are unable to work due to sickness or family reasons.

Donors will receive regular email report on the progress and feedback from the groups and any changes to them, along with invitations to the performances, and other related activities, and an open invitation to visit the community groups.

  • Background

The main company is based in Penwith which has a highly creative, artistic and open community. Cornwall has rural poverty, high unemployment and low wages. Travel is expensive, so we spread the work to Redruth and Falmouth area to help people access the groups. Dartington College has recently moved to Falmouth, Shallal performed at the opening of the new Performance centre. "Companies such as this make experimental theatre accessible to all actors and audiences.’ Rector of Dartington

Vulnerable people who cannot access other forms of dance / art because of their various needs, or too old and too young, the community at large benefit from a model of successful inclusive practise. The participants themselves have fun, gain transferable skills, dance experience, increased confidence, decision making, receive appreciation, develop their creative process, sense of belonging to their local artistic community, and act as positive role models for people with similar needs in society
