  • Need

When a child is born deaf, most parents are unable to understand how best to support their childs early education and welfare needs, and how to use hearing aid equipment. Many parents believe that their child will never learn to listen and talk. As a result there is much reduced communication between parent and child, stress is increased and the child becomes isolated from society. Parents need practical support to develop speech and language and to use 21st century resources available to them

We will use real time footage from within our Early Intervention Unit and pre school classroom to provide motion video images and high quality audio which will allow participants to see and hear how oral education methods are used to progress every deaf child to age appropriate speech and language.
Using innovative technology participants will see for themselves how our specialist Teachers of the Deaf interact and develop every aspect of a deaf childs learning.

    Aim 3

To develop individual learning plans for every deaf child attending our early intervention programme

» The review and discussion of material will help our specialist staff to clearly identify learning objectives, setting goals and evaluating achivements

    What success will look like

Success will be...To share with parents and professionals the goals set and milestones achieved by all our deaf children and to raise early education standards

    Aim 4

Parents will be able to learn how to encourage the regular wearing and care of hearing aid equipment

» Parents will watch how to use specialist hearing aid equipment without distressing their deaf child through “too much” hands on practice

    What success will look like

Success will be...parents will feel confident in the use and maintenance of hearing aid equipment, ensuring optimum hearing for their child and fewer visits to GPs

  • Impact

Video will be used to deploy employee and professional training in a lecture format.
Recorded material will help explain the vital work of The Elizabeth Foundation in a clear and visual manner to new parents and visitors and to disseminate best practice in support of deaf children throughout the UK. We believe that the long term results of this project will help The Elizabeth Foundation influence other agencies within the UK to provide educational support to young deaf children

It is vital to have the correct infrastructure for cabling and video - we have planned and implemented modernisation of our facilities so that this risk is completely negated.
Training - staff need training in the use of new equipment - our budget allows for professional training to be delivered.
Budget - we need to secure funding for the project - we plan a wide range of activities to help us secure funding before the project begins

We are happy to provide feedback as required (e.g. 6 monthly report) and to include information in our newsletters, brochures and on our website. Donors are always encouraged to visit The Elizabeth Foundation. Our annual accounts include a report on all major projects

  • Background

This project will be undertaken at our Hampshire Family Centre, from where we provide first class daily education and welfare programmes to families in the South / South East (including London), as well as families across the UK (via our Home Learning Programme)

Families with deaf or permanently hard of hearing children aged 0 - 5.
We have no catchment area, preferring to help all families who are able to reach our Family Centre or who enrol on our Home Learning Programme.
We support all families regardless of marital status, geographical location, finance, ethnicity or culture
